Private hire drivers want union backing

CABBIES are looking to set up a professional drivers union branch in Hull to fight for their rights.

More than 100 private hire drivers are in favour of setting up the branch in a bid to resolve issues of contention between drivers and Hull City Council's Licensing Department.

As first reported in the Mail, these issues have ranged from disputes over council stickers on vehicles to proposed requirements for drivers to pass NVQs and other qualifications.

The Hull Private Hire Drivers' group called a meeting at Robbie's Pub in Hedon Road, east Hull, to look at ways of setting up a union branch.
Shaune Clarkson, full-time organiser at the Hull Office of the GMB union, described the meeting as "very constructive".

He said: "I have been to numerous meetings organised by private hire drivers in Hull, so I am aware of the bread and butter issues they are concerned about. Lots of ideas were put forward at this meeting and lots of the proposals raised need to be addressed.

"We listened to what the bulk of the issues were and have put them down in document form and plan to meet again in the next four to six weeks."
A number of private hire drivers in the city are already members of the GMB.

However, if more drivers join them, the drivers would be able to pool their powers to form a Professional Driver Branch (Hull) that would focus on their concerns.

Also present at the event were fellow GMB members, chair of the council's licensing committee, Councillor Steve Bayes and members of the private hire community.

Mr Clarkson said: "We have a number of private hire drivers who are members of the GMB, but we are trying to expand on that.

"What we are saying to drivers in Hull is if they join an organisation like the GMB then we will be able to put arguments forward on their behalf.
"We are just at the early stages, but are looking to form a Professional Driver Branch similar to the one in London."

Steve Ralph, former chairman of the Hull Private Hire Drivers' group, said: "I am no longer a private hire driver, but have been involved with the Hull Private Hire Drivers' group for a long time and still am.

"The committee are all members of the GMB, but we are trying to get more drivers to join so we can become members of a GMB Professional Drivers' branch. As soon as we have enough members, the GMB will see us as a separate group.

"This group can then get together a list of issues they want the council to look at and will hopefully be able to change things."

Wouldn't a PH Association do the same and be a cheaper option?

My other gripe about things like this is nobody wants to be part of anything until they have a problem. Solve the problem dissolve the union

Fertile ground for Charlie but perhaps milegae might be a problem however I wouldn't be surprised to see a H added to Charlies ever increasing abreviation of taxi and private hire associations. lol
