Talks planned to ease Burnley taxi tensions


A CRISIS meeting has been arranged to improve relations between town hall bosses and taxi drivers.

The event, to be held at Turf Moor, follows a row last year over an attempt to force cabbies to take extra training.

Furious drivers hit out at the proposals, saying they were not properly consulted over plans to make them attend college courses.

Councillors have approved plans which will see existing drivers given three years to take a BTEC test – designed to make them better cabbies – or face losing their licence.

The meeting is due to be chaired by Sam Tedcastle, a Burnley-based ‘good relations practitioner’ and a former member of a Government-backed commission on integration.

Council chief executive Steve Rumbelow, leader Gordon Birtwistle and other councillors are also expected to attend.

Coun Wajid Khan, who has been invited, said: “This is a full-day event and it is about improving relations between the council and taxi drivers.

“Hopefully this will help things move forward because things have not been moving forward, with some people talking in a derogatory fashion to drivers.

“I know a lot about the taxi trade and things could definitely be better between drivers and the council.”

Coun Birtwistle said he had yet to receive an invitation to the event.

But he added: “I am unaware of any problems between the council and taxi drivers.”

A Burnley Council spokesman said: “The event at Turf Moor is part of a series of meetings to strengthen and improve relations between Burnley Council and the local taxi trade.

“We're always interested in opportunities to talk through issues to do with taxi provision in the borough.”

Although I can see the point of making sure someone can communicate to a decent standard in English, as well as read and write and add up.

I agree, but it's pointless giving drivers a test designed for non drivers, and TBH I'm not sure they will get funding for it.

Then funding should be sourced from elsewhere......or withdrawn.

An NVQ assessor sitting in with a cab driver is IMO stupid......the driver will be on their best behaviour.......surely mystery shoppers are a far more honest gauge?

As stated in thread after thread I believe all taxi drivers should be trained. I am however concerned about the quality of the training available, but, it is currently all we have and it does have merits. I just wish the trade would do something constructive about it instead of getting on their soap box and moaning about it

WHY???? I'm going to do a college course to enable me to teach the Police how to do their job. They'd soon tell me to F**K off when I waltz into the Police Station and tell them that I'm here to teach them how to do their job better. They'd bend me over and ram the truncheon up my arris.

Your F***IN kidding?? The drongo that was teaching the drivers up our way had served time for benefit fraud and used to work for Help The Aged as a van driver.

Gotta go just have to nip up the uni teachin a class of doctors a bit of brain
