Rogue taxi drivers face fines in council crackdown

ROGUE taxi drivers who pick up passengers illegally are being targeted by Swansea Council. The operation follows anger from licensed cabbies at drivers who solicit for fares without waiting their turn at city taxi ranks.

Taxi union representatives say those drivers are able to "cherry-pick" the highest-earning fares, and tell passengers who only want to travel short distances for low fares to queue correctly at the taxi ranks.

Swansea Council, which took over responsibility for policing the city's roads last year, is in the middle of a three-week operation targeting rogue cabbies, with drivers being warned they could face legal action if they don't use designated taxi ranks to pick up passengers.

Martin Saville, council head of environmental health services, said: "The majority of taxi drivers do abide by the rules. But those who don't are putting themselves, their passengers and other motorists at risk."

Whilst I don't agree with cherry pickers I can't see how this is putting passengers and other motorists at risk :? I am however certain that somebody will explain this to me
