Isn't it an offence to hire a taxi without the means to pay for it?

Correct, and why is it down to us?

Might have to try this out on a bus, hello drives, I've got enough to go 5 stops but I need to go 7 stops, as it's cold you won't mind will you?

Oh silly me I should have realised you'd been talking to charlie  you mean NVQ  Yes they do teach customer service in the Btec or VRQ but not the NVQ that's a competance based thing, but, we really don't want to go down that road again.

A few years back I picked up a teen girl who wanted to go home to another town about 10 miles away very late at night.

When she was in with the meter running she asked to go to a cash machine. No problem, there was one on the way.

However, when she tried it she told me that it wasn't working.

No problem, there was another one on the way.

When she returned she told me that one wasnt working either. (?)

So I am about 3 miles into the journey with a teen girl who has no means of paying the fare on her. She tells me that she will get the money of her parents at home.

So off we go, when we get there she goes up to the house and then returns telling me that no one is in.

So what do I do here? I am £20 out of pocket with a lone teen female in the earlyhours of the morning.

The only thing is for me to give my details and a phone number to ring the next day....... never heard from here.

Of course what I could have done in the begining is to have taken her back to the pick-up address (a house) and left here there.

I could have abandended her at the second cash point three miles away.

But of course muggins here did the right thing and got her home which cost me time and money.... being deceived in the process.

The point is that you rarely hear of this in the papers.

This happens to all drivers at least once a month. One day soon the punter will put a card in the meter first then do the run home. Driver gets electronic payment. How boring though

Not enough money, no credit on her phone, single mother out on the sauce and to top it all off she's out of her head on beer. The driver was right in turfing her out.

I had another one this morning. Fare went £9. He gave me £3 saying he'd lost a fiver.... So he didn't start out with enough money in the first place, ffs!

He's gonna ring later today with me money... I won't hold my breath. Thank god for name, address and phone number cross-referencing on the computer. We won't be picking him up again.

I had a female passenger once and the fare only came to £4.40p - Umm sorry drive I have only got £4! alright flower not a problem - some months later the same fare (the same person/same address) with the same flow, of sorry drive I have only got £4 - I then pointed out to her - do not take the p!ss as you have tried that before, she then found the 40p.

The point being is 40p is not the issue (and I do mean that) but some will and do take advantage of a drivers good nature, as some one else before said, if it gets around (and it will) that drivers are a soft touch - then we will all die of starvation. Then where will we all be - because we will get the blame for that as well! she is a career defrauder and he probably did right.

Having said that I play it by ear so to speak.

I've had another one last night, no money, I'll go to the cashpoint, tries to conceal the fact the cashpoint is saying no, all full of bull, took the phone for security, 3rd one in 2 months, reckons he did £250 that day, and doesn't know how, original plan was to do a runner as he wanted about half a mile from his house knowing he had no means to pay, doh I'm stooopid mate.
