Wales Star Phillips Arrested In Taxi-row Allegation

July 18 2009

Wales rugby star Mike Phillips has been bailed by police after being arrested following an alleged bust-up with a taxi driver.

The alleged incident took place hours after the Ospreys scrum-half, pictured, had returned from starring for the British and Irish Lions on their tour of South Africa.

Phillips, pictured, had been enjoying a night out in the centre of Cardiff when he caught a taxi with a friend from outside Barfly, Kings- way, at 3am on July 8.

The police investigation centres on comments allegedly made by 26-year-old Phillips to the taxi driver and an alleged argument over the fare.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman confirmed: “Police officers were called to an incident in the early hours of July 8 in the Penarth town centre area involving a dispute over a taxi fare.”

The force launched an investigation and Phillips was arrested at 6.30pm two days ago(THUR) at his home in Cardiff Bay and taken to Barry police station for questioning.

The 38-times capped Wales international denied the allegations.

He was released from custody at 4am yesterday(FRI) after being placed on police bail pending further inquiries into an alleged public order offence.

Phillips’ agent, former England and Lions prop Mike Burton, last night said: “There is nothing in the allegation.

“Mike Phillips has been happy to co-operate with the police.

“Mike has turned down big offers from two French clubs and a South Africa province since coming back from the Lions tour, where his behaviour was impeccable.

“He is committed to playing in Wales and wants to be left alone to get on with his career as a professional rugby player.”

Phillips was arrested soon after returning from a five-day holiday in gambling capital Las Vegas with his Lions team-mates Ugo Monye, Tommy Bowe, Lee Byrne, Alun Wyn Jones, Andy Powell and Gordon D’Arcy.

In February this year, and a day after Wales beat England at the Millennium Stadium in the Six Nations Championship, Phillips was said to have apologised to people in the Queen’s Vaults pub in Cardiff on behalf of his team-mate Gavin Henson following rowdy scenes.

Phillips, Henson and their Wales colleagues Byrne, Andy Powell, Jonathan Thomas and Rhys Thomas were questioned by Wales coach Warren Gatland.

Henson, Powell, Jonathan Thomas and Rhys Thomas were rebuked by Gatland and apologised for their behaviour.

In another incident, which took place in October last year as Phillips recovered from knee surgery, the player was assaulted outside a nightclub in Mill Lane, Cardiff.

He was taken to hospital with facial injuries, but left after a check-up.

And, in September 2005, Phillips, who was then with Cardiff Blues, and his capital city team-mate James Goode were detained by police following an alleged brawl in the city.

It was claimed the pair reacted after a bottle was thrown at them in St Mary Street. Police described it as a public disorder incident.

Three other men were also arrested and interviewed by police. All five were cautioned and none was charged with any offence.

I think I'm gonna have to back the rugby boy up here, there's no mention of who picked him up, and unless he was asked for a sum of money known to be over the top I can see no reason why he'd feel the need to get into it with a cabby over a fare.

You may be right! but the guy is a total pain when he has had a drink.

It was reported that he was banned from a celeb bar in the City because he was always causing problems, as with many of the Welsh players stardom has seemingly gone to his head.

Another one from below might change your mind.

Ahh right, picture becomes clearer now, so what we have is a 26 yr old who thinks he's god and treats everyone as an underer, lets hope the bankruptcy court finds him eventually and he can learn how to be a real person at the Johnson & Johnson factory.

I thought celebs, stars, sports stars, pop stars and the like could do what they liked?

steven gerard/amy winehouse have just got off with assault, naomi cambel/air rage, alex ferguson/speeding (needing a dump?), Tevez driving with no UK licence, Pete Doherty, more drugs than Boots, George Michael asleep/smashed at the wheel of a range rover, etc...

It would appear so! and not only that but also censorship of comments if it is not complimentary

You might note that (1) comment was removed! that comment was mine.

There was no bad language or anything of defamation. All that was put there were words to the effect of; "Well done Mike let us hope that this is the last as you seem to court trouble" as I say something on those lines and was removed.

It epitomises the press in this country whereby they doctor/edit/ everything and anything that they want. We are told that we have Democracy and free press in this country, and people believe it. there again I suppose the operative word is "Told".
