What happened it's a silent movie to me

This was the famous Michael Fish weather forecast when he said, "Earlier on today apparently a woman rang the BBC & said that she heard that there was a hurricane on the way. Well if you're watching; don't worry, there isn't"

The next day saw an incredibly devastating hurricane, with lives lost, damaged property all around the country, transport chaos everywhere including cancelled trains & planes, bridges closed & hunderds of thousands of trees blown down all over the country including most or all of the seven oaks in Seven Oaks in Kent.

Now that shows how old I am!!!

An anecdote:

I remember that evening very well indeed!

On the Wednesday evening, a young navy lad in the local pub was having his last drink before setting off on a 3 month tour of duty on a minesweeper. The following evening, he was back in the pub!! 'Why,' we asked. 'Our skipper says there's a hurricane coming so we returned to port,' says he. 'Don't talk a load of bo11ocks,' stated three experienced yachtsmen and amateur meteorologists, (ie us!) 'You need sea temperatures of 60+ degrees, an established tropical cyclone, etc., etc., etc. There's no way there will be a hurricane round these parts....ever!!'

The lad had us buy him drinks all night on the Friday and we spent most of the weekend scouring Portchester foreshore for boats that had broken away from our sailing club moorings in Gosport. Quite a mess!!

The club barograph told a story with the pressure falling very, very steeply over the course of a couple of hours before recovering nearly as quickly. I seem to recall a wind speed of about 80 kts being recorded at the club. I'll see if I can find any reference to the event in my archives.

I won't forget that one for many years.

It was more like 15 million trees lost.

A large proportion of them were left in the place where they fell to rot away thereby providing new habitat and nutrients.

Many wooded areas that you drive through still show evidence of fallen trees even after about 23 years.
