You could take up cricket. :-$

The Rules of Cricket

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.
When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

:? :? :? :? I use to understand cricket but there are way too many in's and out's to follow when you describe it

Sound a bit like sex to me! :?

That's probably why I understood the rules then

How would it work with cameras? Football is a fast moving game. In the time it takes for someone to review a situation the ball could already be in the net at the other end of the pitch. Just how far do you propose taking play back and how would you rewind the watch to allow for the time played after the incident? In reality I think we just have to accept that occasionally mistakes will be made.

The referee may have been the nearest to the situation but that does not mean he had the best view or indeed was even looking in that direction. As I have already pointed out it is the assistants responsibility to indicate when the ball has gone out of play.

SKY do replays within seconds.

Of course they do but whilst they are showing the replay the game is continueing.

Perhaps.....if you count several minutes of arguing, referees having to approach his linesman/assistant referee etc as "play continuing". (Watch the C/Palace "goal" again, from the point of going into the net, to the point when all the commotion died down...and time it. Using video evidence would have taken half the time!)

Too many luddites out there, afraid of technology, claiming the game would be ruined...or that mistakes give fans something to talk about... or that it "all evens out over the season" (which is rubbish, some get more good luck, some get more bad. Bolton were relegated because of a referee's mistake whilst playing Everton I believe, a few seasons back). And for those who say "It's not one game that gets you relegated, but your form over the whole season"...well yes, it should be YOUR form, not the referee's!

The correct result is what matters and whilst TV replays would not answer every problem, that is no excuse for not using it to remove over half of the problems...where appropriate.

No-one wants TV to be stopping the action every 30 seconds...but clearly it wouldn't. The new "hawkeye" technology, supported by prem league clubs would be practically instantaneous and even if video replay used instead, it should and would only be used for goal-line disputes, possibly penalties. In theory, it could be used for other things (like in rugby and cricket), but if so, only at the ref's discretion, to help with something that they would like clarifying.

In light of our National football teams recent success, the BBC will be showing a World Cup 2010 preview tomorrow night at 10.30pm. Except for viewers in Scotland and Wales who will be watching "Out of Africa"
