You could strap your passenger in perfectly in a rear loader. You may even be able to do it more easily than loading from the side, I don't know.

The real danger is not in an accident whilst in motion or in traffic. The occupents of the vehicle are taking the same chance as any other vehicle passengers and drivers in any other vehicle.

The real danger is when loading and unloading. You are not in the crumple zone, you are the crumple zone. The human body does not crumple (well it does, but it does not uncrumple!).

Additionally extra rank space is required - or should the last Hack on the rank be used for the wheelchair passenger?

I say again Ban them all - Taxi, PH or private vehicle.
The last hack on the rank!!! The poor guy could be sitting there for about a week waiting for a job. I can just see all these fat baldy cabbies playing paper scissor stones to see who's getting lashed to the back.

I can see that being really popular.....a whole line of cabs refusing a wheelchair bound passenger

Dunno about it even being on the other side. You would still not be able to move as the pavement would be chocka with soliceters waiting for the public to go flying walking past.

Back to normality though I'm PH and i do get wheelchair jobs but 99 times out of 100 it's not much of a struggle as the disabled customer can manage to get out of the chair and into my front seat otherwise they would probably get a hack as they are more accesable if someone is confined to their chair. As hackney drivers how many wheelchair jobs do you get roughly in a week.?

Why is that? What is dangerous? I am asking because I can't see what difference it makes. (I don't have any WAVs)

When you open the rear doors you can (and usually do) obscure your rear lights (including Hazards).

You, and your wheelchair passenger also obscure the rear of the vehicle.

Any car, lorry, van, bus, taxi or cyclist is going to hit you and cause you and your passenger a very bad day.

IMHO not only should they banned across the board for use as Taxis, they should be banned for use as private cars including when provided under the mobility schemes.

Thank you for explaining that.

Thats why AA vans have more flashing lights than a showground funfair...
one of their drivers was crushed to death at the rear of his vehicle a few years ago...maybe a high level flashing roof light or two might solve the rear loader issues in the same way..

How many wheelchair manufacturers approve their chairs for use as a vehicle seat?

I'd like to see one after it's been hit in rear, how would they get the wheelchair passenger out if the doors were caved in? They can't get them out of the side door because they aren't big enough to get the wheelchair out, plus the folded down seat would be in the way. I doubt any of these vehicles have been crash tested.

Good question......one that has been unanswered south of the border despite the question being raised.
