For those out there who have had the displeasure of an HMRC enquiry that has cost them a fortune or know someone who has, I'll leave it up to you to decide how much notice you take of the arrogant court jesters on this forum

:D

I did back in 1992 when they were trying to screw me for £5000, I went in front of the commissioners at Mansfield Civic Centre, they were a bunch of local businessmen, I pleaded my case and got away with paying nothing. I did all the fighting myself with no help from anyone, when I did go to see someone to see if they would help me all they were talking about was how much it would cost me.

Anyway I got away with it with no one to thank only myself.

The only time one of my mates has been up before an enquiry was when his accountant didn't add up his return properly.

Some may find managing their own accounts, then completing the online tax return easy to do, others may not. Also, whilst having an accountant may be advisable, certainly for those with higher incomes, or more complex accounts, it is no guarantee that an individual will avoid falling under the criteria that trigger an investigation, which would still, arguably, incur costing "a fortune".

Of course...for those who may worry about such an expense...there are also insurance policies available, at between £50-£100p.a., which would cover any legitimate accountancy costs etc, should you be the target of a HMRC enquiry.

They wouldn't cover you for any fraudulent activity...but no-one on TDO would even think of telling lies to the taxman of course.

Anyway, the way that the job's going...is anyone actually earning enough to pay tax? (apart from Sussex, of course  )

For those who have recorded 100% of their takings correctly, have claimed all allowable expenditure and are competent at filling in their return and/or filing it online....read no further.

Whilst I apologise for perhaps advertising my skills on this forum it is with the sole intention of saving you money.

Being a contributor of various forums mainly following my sporting pastimes I am aware that there are always a number of knockers and possibly I have risen to the bait on some responses to my thread. Indeed this response demonstrates I have again.

There are plenty of people who I am sure are unsure, confused or have kept incomplete records for the purpose of satisfying HMRC. It is this market I am aiming my services at. I have dealt with more incomplete records than I have had hot dinners.

Call it arrogance if you want, but I have tied many chartered accountants up in knots and it is my belief that realistically a £300-400 per year client normally gets farmed out to the office junior.

As for those who may have experienced enquiries a few years ago let me tell you that HMRC are far better equipped at enquiry work these days than the 'old school Inspector' and information these days is collected from all sorts of organisations in preparation for an enquiry. When HMRC go in they are full on and can review back six years and go to twenty if there is good enough reason. To stop this there has to be expertise in ensuring that the 'year of enquiry' is 'not successful'.

Ever heard of the phrase 'poacher turned gamekeeper'?

In this case shouldn't that be the other way around?

All I can say is welcome to the TDO even if it does appear to be a blatant advertisement of your services. You should stick around for the fun factor of this forum if for no other reason, you may even learn something

I have learnt quite a bit already in my short time on the forum.

If I spend much more time reading some of the superb jokes my client's will be getting late filing £100 penalties.........lol..............I'll be working for nothing.

Now I know what you all talk and laugh about when sitting on the ranks!!

I have been with the same accountant (An Asian Lady) on and off for about 14 years.

When I first met her I said treat me like an Asian, she said "what" I said treat me like an Asian, she said what do you mean.........I said I do not want to pay any tax . You might think that was said in jest which in many ways it was  but I have no wish to go elsewhere.

You have heard the stories........go with the flow!

The only accountant I ever used was a very very good accountant.

However he is now dead.

But he managed (about 10 years ago) to fill in, my then tax return, in hospital just prior to his end. :D

And yes I did pay him before he went.
