The railway union are now supporting a 48 hour week for all drivers, this is all since their little love in with Terry and the GMB Minicab section.

Is a max 48 hour week such a bad thing?

I would be surprised if you work more than that, and you're caked.

I don't, but I think it would have a big impact for the day drivers, most of whom (for reasons best known to them) prefer to sit for 30 minutes plus on Station Ranks whilst waiting for the next fare.

I prefer the early hours where fares are waiting for you.

I guess some folks love waiting.

The problem I have is the hour each way between GBC Towers and Central London.

Twas ever thus.

Being a fan of the 48 hour week, and in the less than 1% of drivers that support it, I think the London black cab trade would suffer under it.

It would, IMO, lead to a shortage of drivers out, which in turn would lead to pressure for a quicky KOL.

It's a little ongoing thing between the LTDA and the new kids on the block.

Apparantly they were going to take legal action because we exposed some plan they supported for a restricted week.

They never did.

Latest edition.

Read all about the RMT's attempts to impose a 40 hour working week.

Good old trade unions, 1974 rules.

having read a bit about it, i understand it's applicable only to people who are employed and has no bearing on London cabbies as we are all self employed.

totally meaningless point scoring! Isn't there more important issues to be spending time and money on ?

I love my trade but sometimes i wish i could knock some sense into those that purport to represent us!

would i be right in thinking that to make sure we do a 48 week, is to make taxis have some sort of tacho fitted, and does this include private hire as well

i can't see if ever being workable to be honest! As a driver you have a fare from from A to B, midway along the journey you exceed the hours permitted so what choice would you have but to drop the passengers off immediately and finish your shift ?

Not workable.

Nothing wrong with that.

He's got lovely new cars hasn't he Don?

And you know why he's got all these lovely new cars?

Because his drivers bankroll them by paying him £270 a week rent. :D

'Mugs' comes to mind.

There is if you live over an hour away outside London and you work days.

Plus, why should someone tell me how often and how long I should work?

Typical Unions, lets all live in a Socialist dictatorship.

Just as well no one listens to them anymore.
