TAXI drivers are set to hold a protest march in Chelmsford as part of their campaign to stop the licensing of any more taxis.

It has also been revealed that a second group of drivers has been set up and is promising a service over the holiday period.

As the long-running dispute escalates, there looks to be a split among the drivers on what further action they should take.

The Chelmsford Hackney Carriage Association was formed about six months ago and has issued a statement saying members of the association have voted not to take part in any further withdrawal of services or strike over the festive period, and to continue to offer as normal a service as possible.

Chairman Gary Day said: “We felt we didn’t have a voice and so the association was formed. There are about 30 in the group.

“We do agree there are too many taxis in Chelmsford – there is no disagreement there.

“We shall be meeting with the council in February to discuss the issue, but our members want to reassure the public there will be taxis available and we don’t want to leave people stranded.

“We felt there was the need for another association and there is no animosity between us.”

But Terry Michel, secretary of the Chelmsford Taxi Association, which is holding the march on Saturday, said: “We are disappointed they are not willing to make a stand. Sadly, they want to undermine us.

“It is a small splinter group.”

Mr Michel said there were 125 drivers in the CTA.

The march will start at Chelmsford railway station at noon on Saturday and the drivers will march along Duke Street to the High Street, handing out flyers and carrying banners.

The CTA has already held strikes and disrupted a council meeting in support of its claim that Chelmsford Council should stop issuing new Hackney Carriage plates until an unmet needs survey has taken place.

The council has said it will carry out a review in the new year to look in to the issue.

Mr Michel added the CTA was reviewing the removal of taxis by its members over the New Year period.

Mind you, I dont know the In's and outs perhaps people need to learn about true democracy at least according to Clarkson.

If there's 10 people and 6 want Chinese and 4 want pizza, the majority wins and everybody has pizza.

Which is true, except in my house, where if I want pizza and everybody else wants a Chinese, I drive to the pizza shop and refuse to move.
