Mother jailed for 16 weeks for stealing taxi while drunk

Source: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-storie ... -21922929/

A drunk mum who stole a taxi and sped off with four terrified passengers inside is spending Christmas behind bars.

Teresa Blewett, 41, leapt behind the wheel after the driver left his engine running while he put his customers' luggage in the boot.

She then drove off down a busy road. Once the passengers had recovered from their astonishment and initial fear, one of them rang the police.

Blewett, who has a 15-year-old son, eventually pulled over into a layby and was arrested.

She embarked on the bizarre hijack outside the Town and Country Lodge near Bristol airport.

Police charged her with taking a motor vehicle without consent, failing to provide a breath test and driving without insurance.

Mike Duffy, prosecuting, told magistrates the taxi was not the first vehicle Blewett had approached.

Describing the drama, he said: "First Blewett tried to get into a minibus she did not order and then she approached a nearby taxi.

"She drove off down the A38 towards Bristol with four passengers still on board.

"She pulled into a layby and a member of the public called police."

Lisa Slocombe, defending, said Blewett, from Bristol, stole the taxi because she had been assaulted.

She told North Somerset magistrates: "She had been out with her cousin, who had been given a lift home, so she had to find a taxi herself.

BANNED

"She was then assaulted. She was kicked and punched by about six or seven attackers. She saw the taxi and jumped in.

"She pulled into the layby as soon as she could, having got away from her assailants."

Blewett admitted taking the cab, in October, and driving without insurance. She also admitted refusing to take a breath test.

She was jailed for 16 weeks and banned from driving for three years.
