It is with immense sadness that I have to report that a long time member of TDO, Don Glave, has passed away.

Don was a true believer in driver's rights, and fought many a good fight against those in the trade who think drivers are a necessary evil, on a par with slave labour.

As a senior member of the GMB's Professional Drivers Branch Don helped build that branch from scratch into being a significant stakeholder with the DfT.

Don is now at peace with Mrs Glave who, sadly, also passed away recently.

Brother Don TDO salutes you. =D>

Alex

Dreadful, if not unexpected news.

Don was a good friend and colleague of mine, and I have the utmost respect for him and his views.

He was the sensible side of the trade union movement, and always put others first.

When I last saw him a few months ago he was his usual easy going self, yet even though he was quite poorly, he was concentrating all his efforts on how to take his union forward.

I have no doubt his union will go forward and be a good force for drivers in the future, and a massive reason for that was Don.

God bless mate.

This is terribly sad news, we had a few sparring sessions, but his intentions were admirable.

I only knew Don a short time... and it was obvious that he was not a well man.... but even so he gave the time and effort to attend meetings across the country, and placed his members' views on the table with dignity. his members should be proud that he represented them...... May Don and his wife rest in peace together as they lived together.

Don Glave was a dear friend, brother and comrade. Don lived his life with honour and integrity, and I am proud to say he was my friend. I hope Don and his wife have found peace together. Until we meet again brother you will always be in my thoughts.

I last spoke to Don about ten days ago, despite ill health and the death of his wife Don was still keen to known what the current trade issues were.

Whether you agreed with Don or not on issues, no one can deny he always fought with passion to improve conditions for drivers.

He was one of the founding members of the Door-to-Door Justice campaign that co-ordinated the London Red Route campaign, winning pick up and set down rights for Private Hire drivers.

Life will not be the same without him

The Branch Secretary of the London Region GMB PDB has asked me to post this for him.

The sad news reached GMB headquaters of the passing of ~Don Glave Branch President Professional Drivers Branch 16th March 2010 aged 63. said Terry Flanagan Branch Sec;

I first met Don in a pub in Fleet Street along with Peter Lown we discussed the creation of a Drivers Association for Private Hire Drivers in London from that meeting this association developed into the GMB Professional Drivers and now covers many areas of the country and indeed Hackney Carriage Chauffeur and Couriers. Don played a leading roll and indeed worked tirelessly for the Drivers rights he was disgusted at the vile exploitation of his fellow workers. He became the Assistant Secretary of the GMB Professional Drivers National Organising Committee. Don could always be relied on to attend meertings anywhere he made his points vigourously and with determination. Don coverd meetings at the PCO and with the PHB the MOM group and met Government ministers. He always put his views with determination, when it came to chairing meetings Don would be the first to admit this was a skill that passed him by, but he would do it to the best of his ability.

Don was also a fervent Man U supporter and indeed attended many games I believe he had a season ticket for some seasons, this led to much entertaining debate about Sarf London glory seekers which never failed to excite him but for sure he had some knowledge of the game I believe he played at a fair level many years ago.

To sum up Don was a determined member of the GMB he played it his way and fought his illness with equal determination we lately joked that if he and I hadnt had so many disagreements he might not have battled on so long!! His last meeting was here at Hendon with John Mason the new head of the PCO Don was forthright as usual and we healed our relationship which had been fractious for some time we parted as friends, for that I know he and I will always be gratefull .

Rest in Peace Comrade

Terence Flanagan Branch Sec London GMBPDB
