Taxi crackdown by Dacorum Borough Council authorities

Thursday 25th March 2010

Black cabs and private hire taxi's recently faced a multi-agency crackdown which included departments from Dacorum Borough Council.

During the operation, 19 vehicles were stopped and checked by borough council agencies, Hertfordshire County Council authorities and the police.

The borough council's licensing officers issued five notices for breach of council conditions and a number of drivers were given verbal warnings for minor infringements.

These included not wearing their badges, only having one door sign, and not displaying "no smoking” signs.

Two drivers failed the county council’s Road Safety Unit eyesight test, and were referred to an optician.

The police also issued fixed penalty tickets to non-taxi drivers that were spotted committing driving offences.

Four of these were using mobile phones while driving and received fixed penalty notices and points on their licence, two were given penalties for not wearing their seatbelts.

VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) issued four prohibition notices and five advisory warnings for drivers to rectify issues with their brakes, tyres, radios, indicator lights and tinted front windows.

Senior licensing manager Deborah Latto said: "We carry out these spot-checks at least twice every year, to reduce the number of vehicles operating on the roads with faults.

"We hope that this will serve as a reminder to the owners of all licensed taxis to carry out regular safety checks on their vehicles."
