Cab Drivers Know their Monet from their Mascherano

Saturday, March 27, 2010

LIVERPOOL.- City cabbies are getting tours of Liverpool museums and art galleries in a bid to improve their cultural credentials.

National Museums Liverpool is staging a series of “Cultural Cabbie” sessions for drivers to get clued-up on the arts.

Initially drivers will visit the Walker Art Gallery to learn about the venue's most famous paintings. Tours are then planned for all National Museums Liverpool attractions including the Merseyside Maritime Museum and World Museum.

The move is designed to help cabbies provide expert advice to tourists and visitors.

Claire Rider, from National Museums Liverpool, said: “We were approached by cabbies who wanted to learn more about the city's brilliant cultural hotspots so they could pass on this knowledge to passengers.

“By having good information about places like the Walker Art Gallery they are in a better position to show off the city to visitors.

“Initially around a dozen cabbies will come on tours but we want as many as possible to get in touch and become Cultural Cabbies.”

Personally I don't see any harm in them doing this in fact I think it's a good idea for cabbies to know what's going on in their city. Although I do think they may just be out for a free tour of the museums and art galleries

I think you might be getting the Walker Art Gallery mixed up with the more modern Tate Gallery Skip

Ya dont need to know the history of flush toilet bowl design in order to take a Cr*p....so it shouldnt be essential to become a cultural ambassador to take punters from A to B... thats the domain of liverpool tourist guides and people in Boats that are busses or busses that are boats :-k

Still...its a good selling point and a bit of an edge for Intellect over Ignorance

I wasn't saying the Walker wasn't in Liverpool. I was referring to your reference of the type of art in it. The more modern art you refer to that your ankle biter could produce is more likely to be found in the Tate, that's all

I think my knowledge of local history adds to tips.

In particular, the Palmerston Forts around the area always bring questions. Being able to answer some of those questions and recommend places to visit for further information is part of the job, IMHO.
