Fairer deal for cabbies

CASH-strapped cabbies have been given longer to replace their vehicles as part of a bid to get older taxis off the road.

The aim had been to ban taxis more than 10 years old from the Blackpool fleet by 2013 but restrictions have been relaxed by town hall licensing chiefs.

It means the maximum age for purpose-built vehicles, mostly black cabs, has been increased to 12 years by 2013.

Saloon taxis must still be no older than 10 years by 2013 but are being given more time to phase in the changes.

Coun Ian Fowler cabinet member with responsibility for business services, said: "We have listened to the taxi trade and we understand the difficulties some of them are facing in the current economic climate.

"We recognise the investment required to buy a purpose-built vehicle. The taxi trade is important to the people of Blackpool.

"This is why we have decided to relax the rules as we have done."

A new purpose-built cab, which can accommodate wheelchairs, can cost up to £35,000.

I wonder how many £35K taxis are or have ever been on the streets of Blackpool?

Why pay £35,000 for them when they get them from the smoke for £2,000?

I wonder if those Landaus they have in Blackpool have to comply with the maximum age limit, both for the carriage & the 'orse?

Of course, the Landaus are totally emmisions free, except for the 'orse droppings along the road & the occasional fart that they emit whilst clenching their buttocks in front of the driver & passenger as they stoll along the promenade.

Boris might like them in London; then he would have to wash the streets down!!

The question still remains, the councillor thinks his taxi fleet is full of people who will pay £35K for a cab.......I think he needs to check his records, because by my reckoning those people are few and far between in that place.

I think its more accurate to suggest they pay £50K + for a plate & £3K for a vehicle to attach it to.

What a joke, they're just about thinking of moving onto the TX1 in Blackpool, never mind a £35,000 cab.

Without being too cheeky towards the trade in Blackpool it's not before time that they have to bring their vehicle standards up, some of those cabs look as old and as weary as some of their drivers
