Audio: Vital clue after taxi driver robbed

28/04/2010 14:58

A taxi driver was robbed by a crowbar wielding thug – but the criminal left a vital clue.

A recording of a telephone conversation of a man booking a taxi in Cambridge has been released by police as part of a manhunt.

The 42-year-old driver for Panther Taxis was booked to pick up a fare at a communal parking area in Hazelwood Close, Cambridge at around 3.50am yesterday.

But when he arrived a man approached the driver’s door and demanded his takings.

As the door was locked, the offender smashed the door window using a crow bar and repeated his demand.

He took two mobile phones and around £100 in cash before running off towards Sunset Square.

The offender is described as white and between 17 and 20. He wore a blue hooded top with the hood up.

Det Con Peter Rivers said: “We need to establish who made the call booking the taxi. The audio of the call has been provided by Panther Taxis in the hope someone will recognise the voice.

“We know the call was made from a telephone box on the corner of Hazelwood Close and Histon Road at 3.40am.

“If anyone saw someone using this telephone, or anyone recognises the voice, I would ask them to contact me immediately.

“The victim was not injured during the incident but has been left very shaken."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Rivers at Parkside police station on 0345 456 4564 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Perhaps the young thug was very quick and the driver was still in a state of surprise. At least the driver stayed inside the vehicle and it remained locked
