WE fight on. That was the message from angry taxi drivers in Chelmsford after the council refused to limit the number of Hackney Carriage licences it issues.

Following strike action last year by the Chelmsford Taxi Association, the council agreed to carry out a review of the service in the borough.

But on Monday night at a meeting of the council’s overview and scrutiny committee, it was agreed there would be no change to the current policy of not limiting licences.

An angry Terry Michel, secretary of the CTA, said after the meeting: “We have been drop-kicked from above. The council is not going to do anything to help us. They have let us down.”

A full report to the committee said that limiting Hackney Carriage plates was not in the best interests of the public. It added: “The council does not have a role in protecting taxi drivers’ trade as it does not do so in any other area of business.”

The council introduced the delimitation policy in 2005 and says there is no need to change it.

Chairman of the committee Tom Smith-Hughes said after the meeting: “There was not strong enough evidence to support limitation.

“Chris Rycroft, who was on the working group, went into the review with an open mind and would have supported limitation if evidence proved it. The evidence was that Chelmsford is not saturated with taxis.”

The committee did agree to look at the situation again next year and carry out a review of taxi rank provision in the borough.

Idiots! Are they not aware of the fact that a survey has to be done to establish if there is any unmet demand? And if they do the trade has to pay for it!!

what a pleasant bunch of councillors they have in Chelmsford...Is there some council statute that dictates their councillors must have their Arse transplanted to their mouth and Vice Versa ??

As you say, without a survey the council can't impose a limit and it is the local trade who have to pay for it.
Even if no SUD is established, the council don't have to limit. It's still not binding on them.
PH can't be limited at all.

I think Chelmsford council may find they will want to approve camera systems before a driver fits one.

And next year it will be too late for those fleets that aren't 100% WAVs.

How fecking pathetic is that, I hope you don't consider yourself to be fighting for your trade, or your living, you sad bunch of barstewards?

Tell Terry, there's only a handful of councillors, and a whole army of Taxi Drivers. If Terry, had any brains the council would be kissing him on the ar*e.

I've always been in the fight CC, you see that's the difference between you and me, you wish, I know.
