Cabbie convicted of sex attacks on rides
A cab driver who denied sexually assaulting two female passengers was unanimously convicted by a jury at Northampton Crown Court.
Jumal Miah, aged 30, groped two women passengers in the space of two days while working for A1 Taxis in Northampton and then tried to get a friend to provide him with an alibi.
Miah, of Overstone Road, The Mounts, had denied the charges, but was unanimously convicted of sexual assaults and perverting the course of justice, after a three-day trial.
Judge Ian Alexander QC said he would pass sentence once a pre-sentence report was ready.
Miah had picked up a woman, who cannot be named, from Gold Street on April 9 last year and gave her a lift back to her home in St James, the jury heard.
When he dropped her off at her house, he then followed her through the door and tried to kiss her.
A second woman fare who Miah sexually assaulted was a passenger in his cab two days later.
The court heard she had been picked up with two friends by Miah, outside the Fever nightclub. After dropping the friends in Kingsley, Miah was to then drive to Bellinge but took a wrong turn. He then stopped the cab and asked her to get in the front, where he sexually assaulted her.
When the police began investigating, he asked a friend to provide him with an alibi, but was caught out, later claiming he had only been asking for a character reference.
The court heard Miah, who was remanded in custody for six weeks, was cautioned by police in July 2006 for soliciting a woman for prostitution.
Adjourning for reports, Judge Alexander told the jury of eight men and four women: "I need to know more about him, and find out how serious this is. One really does need to find out more about people who behave like this, as a way to find out if they are potentially more dangerous. These were relatively minor sexual offences. That doesn't mean it was not upsetting for these girls, because it undoubtedly was.
"But these offences are sometimes warning shots, for what may result in more serious sexual offences, so it is our duty to have a pre-sentence report so probation can make all the inquiries and give the court the benefit of their expertise."

time trying to control themselves like most religious perverts. As the trade seems to be made up mostly from Asian drivers it is bound to happen that they seem to be more prone to it.... It has happened here in Winchester and all were Asian drivers.....
