Some may say that arguing against having assistance dogs in taxis are the same

As gusmac has pointed out sighted people have a choice, what exactly is your problem with this legislation?

the disabled discrimination act is discrimanatory

how perverse is that

to be "fair and equal" hacks would have to be obliged to carry ALL dogs

in fact its anti-able bodied dog owner AND anti-dog

a dog pressed into service as a disabled aid CAN travel by taxi, all other pooches have to walk (at the discretion of a taxi driver)

can i always tell if the passenger is blind or not, can i tell if its a genuine seeing eye dog or just the family pet?

Like what, exactly?

doesnt/wouldnt matter, a hack is only SPECIFICALLY obliged to carry seeing eye DOGS

I think you will find that you have to carry "assistance" dogs which also covers hearing dogs and possibly others.

I think "you have to" is the problem. Who said, blind compliance is a prerequisite of the job?

wannabeeahack, has a point.

I don't agree. I think the DDA covers it.

Edinburgh, has approximately 1300 WAV's, unsuitable to carry wheelchairs. The CEC's Health and Safety department would not allow council staff to transport wheelchair users in the vehicle types we use. The Ambulance Service is same.

A simple risk assessment excludes you from transporting wheelchair users. You don't need a medical or an exemption certificate.

While, I am sure the DDA, covers all of this, it does not protect the taxi driver in the event of an accident. However, the Health & Safety act does.

As far as I am aware there are only two taxi drivers in the whole of Edinburgh, who have never had wheelchair training. That would be Keith Bell, and myself. It makes you wonder why you need a medical to prove, you are not capable, to push a wheelchair up, a ramp and strap them in.

Could it be the WAV's, the Edinburgh Taxi Trade use, were never suitable in the first place?

Yes you can. If it is an assistance dog it will be wearing the harness appropriate for the owner. If it isn't it is not on duty.

The passenger may not be blind they maybe deaf and the dog maybe their hearing dog you will need to check their harness to see what it is before you stick two fingers up at th passenger

All the assistance dogs I have picked up are better behaved than most of the other "animals" I've picked up

I don't see the argument here at all.

I tell dog owners, regardless of it being a pet or a working animal, they must sit in the front with the dog in the foortwell between their legs. All 'assistance' dog owners comply with the request, without fail. They are aware of the special treatment they get. They are also aware that other passengers have to follow in the car later on. I normally explain that:

1. It keeps all the hair in one place;

2. I can see what the dog is up to, which is crucial if I may be required to suddenly pull over because of the dog.

Only once did a lady refuse to sit in the fron with the dog. She said she didn't think she could control it in the front! Well I wasn't too confident of her controlling it in the back after that comment. Neither of them got into the car!! It wasn't an assistance dog, by the way.

If you don't want to carry your passengers, go stack some more shelves!!

The RNIB recommend you switch your air bag off otherwise it could kill the dog

in the front? - how does that work with a london/icon cab, do they carry front seat passengers with dogs?
