Almost every person in Scotland, home of the deep fried mars bar, has an unhealthy lifestyle. (Daily Telegraph, Friday June 11th)

A study claims that 97.5 per cent of Scots are likely to be cigarette smokers, heavy drinkers, fat, have a bad diet and never do any exercise. But the problem could be even worse, as the study used self-reported answers, which notoriously underestimate a problem.

The study, by the University of Glasgow confirms that the Scot's bad habits contribute to their high rates of cancer and heart disease. The paper published in the journal BMC public health, was based on an analysis of 6,574 people who answered the Scottish health survey in 2003.

Dr David Conway, of the university, said " Our analysis shows that around two-thirds of the Scottish population is overweight or obese. No wonder we never get to the world cup finals."
