Taxi driver lost licence

Fri Jul 02 2010

A Preston taxi driver has lost his licence and been ordered to pay £440 after he was convicted of plying for hire.

Ilyas Abdullah Patel, of Holmrook Road, Deepdale, was caught out after in a sting by Preston Council’s licensing unit tackling rogue cabbies.

The 38-year-old, who drives a private hire vehicle, was found plying for hire on outside the Black Bull in Garstang Road, Fulwood, on December 11.

He pleaded guilty to plying for hire without a hackney carriage licence and driving with no insurance.

Speaking at his home, Mr Patel today said he was “very sorry” for what he had done.

He claimed it was the first time in four years as a cabbie he had done

He said: “I made a mistake because I used to drive a black cab and then I moved on to the private hires.

“It was a misunderstanding.”

He was fined £100 for the plying for hire offence, and £150 for having no insurance when he appeared before Preston Magistrates Court.

Magistrates did not give him any penalty points, but imposed a ban because of his “appalling driving record”.

Patel had claimed exceptional hardship to avoid disqualification, but the magistrates said he “chose to ply for hire knowing it is an offence”.

Patel was also ordered to pay Preston Council £175 costs and the £15 victim surcharge.

He has now lodged an appeal against his driving ban which will be heard at Preston Crown Court in the next few weeks.

He added: “Hopefully if I am allowed to keep driving Preston Council will let me keep my licence.

“Without it I have no job because I am self-employed and my family will be homeless.”

A second driver charged with similar offences will stand trial next week.

Javeed Iqbal Goga, of Basil Street, Ribbleton, is accused of plying for hire and driving with no insurance.

He will appear before Preston Magistrates Court on July 7.

Of course it was Mr Patel.

But the magistrates did not believe you, because you are a lying bar steward!!

Am I right in thinking that the "Black Bull" is the one one with an official Hackney stand at the side of it ?

At least there was last time I was up that way

Ilyas Abdullah Patel and Javeed Iqbal Goga...Am I sensing a pattern of disregard for UK law being formed here?

After recent events in Dundee regarding the insurance issue we are confident that the police will carry out test purchases so they can also charge ph with driven with out insurance when they are caught illegally picking up. :D
