The driver should ask for the passenger by name & not the other way round.

No way. If I shouted out the passengers name the world and his wife would say "that's me". I always ask the passenger what their name is and if it's not what's on my data head they don't get past sticking their head through my window :D

I said ask NOT shout!!

FFS, when I was on a dispatch system I had no problem doing it that way.

I do similar, then expect the window to be gobbed at.

Nice folks around here.

Nah they don't do that here. The girls usually hit the car with their handbag or their heels and the lads just mutter things under their breathe, unless of course they're wearing heels

There shouldn't be any visible markings on the outside of the vehicle saying it's a private hire vehicle,

If there are no markings how the hell are the passengers suppose to know it's a PHV. It's a bit late once inside the vehicle of Mr Perv to discover you got in the wrong car

There are a number of ways, some companies send a text message with details of the car and/or registration plate when the driver arrives at the pick up, some also have a ringback/callback feature, where your phone rings and a recorded message plays to let you know your car has arrived. If it's an outside pick up, say at a supermarket/station, the customer may be asked to describe themselves i.e. a basic description of what clothes they're wearing, type of bags they're carrying etc., so the driver can recognise them easily.

When a customer rings for a car, the operator may also be the controller, and can allocate their car immediately and inform the customer the driver's name, car, ETA etc...

With all due respect we have these mod cons on our system presently, but, on a weekend night, with a belly full of ale in the middle of town or even Liverpool without the door signs the customer is going to have to go a long a row of vehicles to find out which one is theirs cos they couldn't be bothered reading or listening to the description. It's only my opinion but I think PH should be recognisable for what they are

IMO all PH should have these signs. In our manor they've had them for years, do the public take any notice of them?? DO they heck as like.

So what's the point in having them then?

Which is why there are so many people in London getting into unlicensed vehicles.

Does anyone really thing pi**ed up birds are going to look for a little disc holder late at night? :?

And when you pick up at venues with hundreds of people waiting do you ask to check their driving licenses or passports?

Yep, and any other vehicle that has wheels and an engine.

And more signage will only encourage more people to approach the few thousand who tout at night in London, making their illegal trade even more attractive to half of Africa, Bosnia and Pakistan.

I should have written, 'the driver should ask the passengers name' & not 'by name'.

It works for me & always has done.

You do seem to have a real problem in London with the PH and the touting, but, if it stops people getting into completely unlicenced vehicles then I think it is best to have signs on the PH vehicles :-|

it actually ENCOURAGES them to approach a PH though

Does it? It could just be that they can't get a taxi or they don't want to pay the going rates for a taxi

As I mentioned, I certainly get approached.

If I didn't have those PCO round things in my windscreen and rear window, then I'll probably be left alone.

so your saying totally private cars (not PH, not HC, not limos) with no signs or lights get approached with "how much to "XXXXX" mate?", cos i dont think ive ever been asked UNLESS ive been in a plated car of some type with external clues that i carry passengers for hire/reward........
