Does it? It could just be that they can't get a taxi or they don't want to pay the going rates for a taxi

so your saying totally private cars (not PH, not HC, not limos) with no signs or lights get approached with "how much to "XXXXX" mate?", cos i dont think ive ever been asked UNLESS ive been in a plated car of some type with external clues that i carry passengers for hire/reward........

I didn't say anything. You said "it actually ENCOURAGES them to approach a PH", I just asked if it did. Imo hiding PH like it's some dirty little secret is not good for public safety. People need to know what they are getting into or more to the point what they're not getting into

they WILL know, cos they booked it! doh!

"thank you mrs jones, thats booked, your vehicle will be a black mondeo reg BL56 TTY, please be looking out, and we will text or ring you to say its outside"

DVLA only issue reg numbers to one vehicle...

I could have avoided 99% of the unwelcome advances of [edited by admin] in the street by having no signage at all

You could avoid 100% by not being in the street. Is it too difficult to say 'sorry I'm booked'

That's great if all your customers are sober and there's no other PH or taxi around, Doh!!

You do seem to have a real problem in London with the PH and the touting, but, if it stops people getting into completely unlicenced vehicles then I think it is best to have signs on the PH vehicles :-|

So they can use licensed touts with no checkable background instead of unlicensed touts with no checkable background?

That's all a matter for enforcement. There are obviously problems, but, what would you rather have. Ph that are seen to be what they are or no signs and any Tom, Dick or Harriet pretending to be Ph. We know there are touts but that should not stop you from protecting the public as best can be. Anyway it's only my opinion and yours is that they shouldn't be marked. So at the end of it all we just agree to disagree :D

whats the biggest problem, PH taking flag downs or unlicensed vehicles taking ANY fare?

if PH having no signs is such a menace, why are some LAs taking money to plate vehicles without the need for plates and/or plating older/bigger "exec" cars with a very insignificant rear plate only?

and if 1 LA thinks rooflights for PH are such a GOOD idea, how come most dont?

as for enforcement, how can 1 LAs officers hope to know every incoming vehicles local regs, i could slap a PH rooflight on in brum, or conversley, remove my PH door "advance" signs at a whim, only MY areas LOs would know

I quite agree the roof sign is terribly confusing. Shouldn't be allowed on PH imo :D

and the next logical step is total anonymity for PH with maybe a rear plate only so cops know your licensed

whats needed i one national policy on colour and signs

PH

No rooflights, plates on the rear, no advertising, colour white (or to be decided)

HC

Rooflights, signs, advertising, colour black only

keep it simple

Surely that would make them easier to flag down, as once it becomes known those white cars are licensed, folks will thing they are taxis.

The chap from London said his little disc in the window gives the impression to some that he is a taxi.

how would joe public know WHICH white cars to flag down though?

the TFL disc is a giveaway, i.e. a sign its plated

the colour regime could be brought in over a 3 year span to avoid hardship, or built into PH regs for any suitable period, its quite simple

locally we have an "executive" plate, allowing older cars of "status" to be plated following PH rules but without the yellow "advice" stickers, i fail to see why they (the stickers) are required on my 55 plate mondeo but not on a 02 plate merc c180.....

They wouldn't but it won't stop them trying and Mr lucky perv will be rubbing his hands with glee at the opportunity afforded him. Just like they wouldn't know if they were in a licenced PH or not until they got inside the vehicle if some had their way. It's about the public not the drivers. Just because HC drivers don't like PH to be recognisable, and in some cases for good reason, doesn't mean it's the safest way to go
