Taxi alcohol advertising ban could be lifted in Birmingham


A BAN preventing alcohol from being advertised on the side of Birmingham taxis, introduced following pressure from Muslim cabbies, could be lifted.

Council licensing bosses are under pressure to back down and allow promotional material for Jack Daniels whisky to be displayed.

Moves to have the restriction scrapped are being led by national advertising agency Ubiquitous.

The firm’s production manager, Tom Harris, said Birmingham was one of only a few major UK cities to impose the ban.

Mr Harris added: “The main reason we cannot advertise in Birmingham is due to the high number of Muslims that make up the general population, not only taxi drivers, who take exception to advertising alcohol on religious grounds.

“While we would not seek to pressure any driver to carry any advert that was counter to their beliefs, the fact that we cannot advertise alcohol seems unfair to the hundreds of thousands of people living in Birmingham who do consume alcohol.”

Mr Harris said he had identified drivers willing to carry Jack Daniels advertising in Birmingham.

The issue will be debated by the city council Licensing Committee on September 15.

Personally I don't see the problem. If a driver doesn't want to advertise anything on the side of their cab they don't have to, it doesn't really matter what it is. If it is against your belief to advertise alcohol then advertise something that isn't against your belief. Sometimes I find religion a little oppressive, but, I wouldn't seek to ban it. Each to their own I suppose

Why is it we always bend over backwards to appease the Muslims, they dont bend over backwards to appease us!....if they dont like the adverts then dont look at the cabs or drive them...when in Rome do as the Romans do...

I know of plenty of muslims who have no problem advertising alcoholic products, especially when selling them from their shops. Same applies to pork, bacon etc.

The Jack daniels advert is a mess. It makes the cab look like it has had an accident. I am old school. I dont believe in adverts, especially full livery's on TX type vehicles. What was wrong with all black ? Answer is leeches which attach themselves to the trade make money off these adds. The owner of a TX in Manchester gets 600 quid a year for a full livery, 12 quid a week. 1 day off work to put the livery on, and 2 days off (if you are lucky) to put the cab right when they rip the advert off. If you have a football team add on i.e Manchester City this year, you also need to replace windows every time you go to Old Trafford on match days.
I believe councils should put a 20 pence increment on the meter to compensate loss of revenue and then ban all Livery's.

No Tx owners have learnt that by giving the cab a full body wrap it stops them falling apart

I think for what they get paid it is a lot of hastle but if people will insist on buying an expensive motor they have to pay for it somehow and I doubt the vinyls would help to hold the car together more likely to damage the paint finish

Britain is NOT YET a muslim country we have about 20 years left before we do become one so why should regional councils follow such policies on religous grounds I do think that alcohol advertising is unsuitable for the taxi trade after all why promote excessive alcohol consumption resulting in punters being in an unfit state to travel
