The scale of the issue is unknown, with most councils stating they simply do not know how many of their existing drivers have convictions.

er.....CRB CHECKS?

But the one authority which says it does keep records – Hambleton District Council in north Yorkshire – admitted more than 10 per cent of its current licensed taxi drivers have criminal convictions, while nearly half have been found guilty of motoring offences.

The council says most of the 25 criminal convictions happened many years ago.

Head of legal services Martyn Richards said: "Of the 25 drivers with criminal records, only five have convictions in the last 10 years.

"All of them we would class as minor offences. Many relate to incidents that happened 20 to 30 years ago.

"Of the 112 drivers with motoring convictions, 70 of them currently have points on their licences – the rest are old convictions and are 'spent

Are you telling me that a former sex offender should be allowed to work with children because he has not re offended in years.I do not think it is unreasonable or discriminatory to stop sex offenders ever working with children in any way and i think the law would back this up.

And what you have to remember a licence Authority only have to be reasonable in there decision.

I am not saying that at all but in this particular case the licensing authority LOST in the court and had to renew the chaps license

Then the law is wrong :)

In every way.

Would you have an ex rapist working for you Grandad??

Under anti discriminatory law, it may prove difficult not to employ someone who the law says is fit and proper to do the job.

But he's not fit and proper is he?? He's commited a serious crime and putting him in a driving seat where he's transporting children to school is a recipe for him to committ another sexual offence.[/code]

I'm not sure this is the case in Bradford, but I came across something similar a while back.

Basically a 25 year old chap had gay sex with a 19 year old chap, prior to the change of law which prohibited gay sex for under 21s.

Now the law is the law, as it was then, and that act then was classed as rape.

However is there anyone who would today ban a 25 year old driver because he had gay sex with a 19 year old chap? :?

There is a Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 for all to see

BTW, who said he raped a child?

I support having standards, passengers (of all ages) should expect protection, but can you ban the guy from holding a badge for eternity not knowing the facts. the word "rape" can cover a multitude of events and you arent privvy to the facts

or we could just all go round, drag him out his car and hang him from a nearby tree like the good old days?

Yes lets do that.

About 5 years ago I got hold of a guys CRB check via a 2nd party. A council had given him a badge even though he had over 30 convictions for burglary and 5 offences for gross indecency against a boy and a girl.. Fair enough the convictions were spent but giving him a badge to transport people about??

It does not matter what he drives, if he has granted a license after declaring all convictions he is declared fit and proper until he commits a further offence. We have a man found guilty of Murder here on Manchester. When it hit the press several years later the council tried to revoke his license. They could not, he still drives. A nice bloke by the way.
