Fake cabby is banned from town pick-ups

A BOGUS taxi driver has been banned from picking up and carrying passengers in Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough County Court has granted an injunction against Daniel Wood, of Wilton Street, Middlesbrough.

It prohibits him from plying for hire or carrying out private hire work in Middlesbrough, and from picking up, dropping off or carrying passengers in the areas surrounding the Western Social Club in Union Street and the Bongo nightclub in Bridge Street West.

Injunction proceedings were brought by Middlesbrough Council after evidence gathered over a two-year period showed Wood, 66, picking up and dropping off passengers at peak times from specific locations despite not being licensed as a taxi driver or being properly insured.

Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council's Executive councillor for community protection, said: “The council has received regular complaints from legitimate taxi drivers in Middlesbrough about the activities of Mr Wood.

“With the assistance of the licensed trade, Cleveland Police’s road policing unit, regular enforcement exercises and the use of CCTV cameras we were able to gather enough evidence to obtain the injunction.

“The licensing regime is to protect members of the public and it is the council’s responsibility to ensure vehicles and drivers carrying out private hire and hackney carriage duties within the Middlesbrough area are properly licensed and insured.”

Cllr Rostron said that before licensing any driver the council ensured each applicant underwent a rigorous vetting procedure including a medical examination, criminal records check and practical driving test and that vehicles were properly tested and insured.

Maybe he got it insured and paid to get it back.

I doubt an injunction would stop him surely they should have been concentrating on getting nicked a couple of times for improper insurance that would remove his driving license

Why don't they just impound his car??

An injunction is easy to obtain, and if it is broken then easy to enforce.

I think it's quite a good way of dealing with this problem.

Pick up illegally and you will get fined, or points added to your license.

Breach an injunction and you go to prison.

As a Boro hack, the only reason the council have made a move on this, is because of the current conditions that we hacks have to put up with, some say up to 30% of restricted hack plates are for sale in our town, we have a 90 saloon restriction still in place, but we have open issue for WAV's, obviously we have more WAVs then saloons now, sadly we don't have the business for even the 90 saloons.

As it is I own a new shape E7, so a WAV, our saloon plates were selling for about £30k a few years ago, not there are screaming for anyone willing to pay £15/16k.

So because of the current state of the hack market in our small rundown town, the council have at last made this move because of the state of the market not because of the illegal practices, if it was because of him operating illegally it would have been stopped years ago.

Where are these prison places?

If a court sends them down, then a place will be found.
