Whilst stuck in a massivwe traffic jam on the M25 the other day I was looking at the plates on the other taxis and it occurred to me why is there no colour convention for Hackney and PH plates most of the vehicles observed had the mogo style plate attached the rear number palte as is mine but i observed both hackney and PH with white plates and Ph with yellow and I have noticed in the past Hackney plates with other than white

Would it not surely make sense and be a big help to the general public in identifying vehicles if there was a national standard with hackneys being white plates and PH yellow or red plates ?

standardisation would be the death knell of LAs individual powers and the rocky path to a new classification "PCV small vehicle - 8 pass maximum" and putting VOSA in charge.....

why do you think each area is so different in charges/attitudes/regs to the one next door, when theres raelly no need and each (or almost each) area frowns on double-plating?

it an LAs earner and power, they wont give it up and they wont allow anyone to think they will

have 1 national colour of PH and 1 for HC and your almost at the idea of 1 service/legislation and the LAs could be elbowed out, in fact the new goverment could have this suggested to them....

Even with national standards I think there would still be a need for licencing officers in each area so they wouldn't be that put out surely

course not

coaches and trucks are able to monitored by VOSA, who by the way can pull ANY vehicle anyway, ive seen full roadside checks involving VOSA, police, HMRC and the DSS but there was no LO on site, in fact our area has NO dedicated licensing staff, its chucked into "enviromental"

lets see, what exactly is involved?

MOT/compliance test (mot test station)
medical (doctors)
CRB (by form)
Driver test (DSA)
Road tax (post office)

no need for a LO that i can see

trading standards could do more roadsides than a LO

im sure all ours does is hand out forms

I don't see what difference it makes who brings the money into the pot, it's all the same pot. You speak like the LA is an individual

each Licensing area IS an individual - whene did 1 want to join with another (even to save costs, which they wouldnt do cos the HC/PH pay the costs)

For a start, how would you identify out of town HC or PH quickly, other than by different colour plates?

That's the whole idea behind multi-coloured (multi-cultural) licensed plate systems.

why would you need to?

joe public wont walk round the back or even be able to focus on a plate after 12 pints of draught bass, he dont care if its a solihull or warrington cab so long as he gets home...

i thought this was all about public safety?

WHICH would be better protected by the removal of PH:HC plating and make all equal....
