New committee set up to deal with licencing issues

THE first meeting of a newly formed Scottish Borders Council committee has decided to take no action against a Peebles taxi firm accused of driving a vehicle which had been suspended from use.

Border Taxis also had their application for a new licence granted at the inaugural meeting of the civic government licensing committee in Galashiels’ council chambers on Friday.

Although Border Taxis owner John Calder did not wish to comment when TheSouthern contacted him, it is believed there were issues with the report compiled on the incident which led to Mr Calder being called before the meeting.

The new committee, who appointed councillors Gavin Logan as chairman and Sandy Aitchison as vice-chairman, will deal with matters which officers cannot under their delegated powers.

Proposed alterations to the taxi rank in Peebles and retention of the four existing zones for the on-street hiring of taxis were lso discussed at Friday’s meeting.

It was decided that taxis may ply for hire only in the area for which they are registered, but would still be available to respond to pre-bookings outwith that zone.

Committee members also agreed to refuse a renewal of a taxi driver’s license and to uphold the continued suspension of another’s. Neither driver appeared before the committee.

Mr Logan said: “I am delighted to be elected chairman of this committee. There is one member on the committee from each ward and I think that it is important that there will always be input from a member with local knowledge.”

Please explain what this means.

Probably the same as here.
Applications & renewals, substitutions etc are granted under delegated powers by council officials if there are no objections received.
If an objection is received, the committee deal with it.

So, it's a licensing sub-committee?

Seems to me they have not actually done anything at all other un uphold what was already agreed....Except they were decent enough to allow hacks to take on pre booked jobs outwith their own Zones...which they could do anyway and for anywhere in the country.

I wonder how much that cost the Rate payers of the region.
