Fireman: I’ll make a fortune driving cab on Bonfire Night

A Firefighter set to strike on November 5 bragged yesterday he would cash in that night with his second job - as a cabbie.

Nigel Creary spends his shifts at his Knightsbridge base and takes to the road in his taxi later.

He said: "I'll be working over Halloween and bonfire night and I should make quite a bit of money."

"You can't drive fast enough."

The Sun watched on Thursday evening as he parked his blue London cab in the car park at the fire station, close to department store Harrods.

And after his uneventful shift we saw him drive away - half an hour early - with the taxi's "for hire" light on.

We hailed it and asked Mr Creary to take us for a sight-seeing tour before dropping us off at our starting point.

As we neared the end of our journey he said: "Funnily enough, I work at the fire station and so does my girlfriend. I try not to flog my guts out."

"That's the beauty of this job, you take it as hard as you want it."

We gave Mr Creary, from Streatham, South London £20 for the fare before revealing we were from The Sun and asking how he managed to hold down both jobs.

Mr Creary, who works on White Watch, said: "I've just come off shift. I'm not doing anything wrong. I applied for secondary employment. A few people do it."

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said later: "Firefighters are permitted to park their vehicles on the station."

"Secondary employment is allowed. We're looking into the finer points of this individual's circumstances."

Mr Creary earns around £33,000-a-year before working as a cabbie, when he can rake in up to £250 a day.

London firefighters are set to walk out on Guy Fawkes Night over changes to their shift patterns which would make it harder for them to do second jobs.

The strike has been criticised as "reckless and cynical" by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Last year there were more than 200 fires during bonfire night celebrations in London.

This year, around 170 private contractors will man 27 fire engines.

Talks between the Fire Brigades Union and management collapsed after the firefighters demanded a £10,000 pay rise in return for switching to new shift patterns.

Lots of London Cab drivers have other jobs. Once you have your badge, the worlds your oyster in terms of other careers, I should know.

We have about 300 Fireman, lots of Postmen, 200 Police Officers, Musicians, Authors, Accountants etc and etc.

I wasn't aware it's now a crime (according to The Sun ) to have two or three jobs.

It's a shame they never put the same effort into exposing those millions that do fu-ck all for a living.

I have no objection to people having more than one job and hats off to them for making the effort, but, the concern would have to be about doing two shifts in one day if the first shift is a long one. Being a fireman and a taxi driver requires 100% concentration when working

what so no one on here does double shifts in their cabs ? Cant see the big deal really more worried jelous about the 250 pounds per day !!!

Not sure what is worse, a fireman that starts work having done a taxi shift, or a fireman driving a cab having just finished work.

Still the country can afford to pay folks when they are sleeping.

30 years ago the world was ripping into Leyland workers for sleeping throughout a night shift, seems to me fireman are on a par with them when they don't work.

Why is it nurses, midwives, police, paramedics can all work at night without the need of a bed, but fireman can't?

Perhaps you and the Daily Mail could team up and come up with some suggestions as to what they should be doing at 3am in the morning then?

The Police officers that I know that drive Taxis do so on their days off, it's their days off, they can do what they like. The same applies to the fire guys.

Who says the Police and Ambulance workers don't get their heads down at 4am on a quiet Tuesday morning? I know they do.
They're the emergency services, they're not a car production line.

Who gives a sheeite what they do, as long as they turn up when I call them.

£250 a day?

They must work 24 hours for that, the games dead.

I think it's a matter of public safety. I know the guys that drive the trains here aren't allowed a 2nd job because they must have 12hrs rest between shifts. That of course is not to say they don't but if they get caught they could lose their job as a train driver, in fact the same applies if you are a guard on the trains.

Can't fault any of them. If they want better conditions whats the problem? If some of them want a 2nd job why not??

Can we take it he won't be standing on the picket line then?
Leaving that to the ones who don't have a second job?

The money is more than a firefighter.

You also have to put up with many drunks during the night and end up being assualted many times. Also with the fire service you get a brilliant pension, obviously as a cabbie you get nothing.
