Taxi driver ploughs into Llanelli cab office to save woman from 'assault'

Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 07:00

A taxi driver answering an SOS call from his controller raced back to base, knocked away her alleged assailant and demolished the office, say witnesses.

He used his vehicle to rescue Donna Davies during chaotic late night scenes in Llanelli at the weekend said to be reminiscent of the Wild West.

In the mayhem, the driver accidentally ploughed his car into the front of the Master Cabs office, but the cab company's controller Donna has praised him for his speedy reactions.

"Fair play, he saved the day . . . and wrecked the building," she said.

Donna described a fight breaking out at the taxi office and one of the brawlers trying to get out.

"I was holding the door and had to hold it tight, that's when I got bruised," she said.

"I have a bruised shoulder, neck and slight injuries, nothing major. He grabbed me in the doorway and pulled me out to get back in.

"I called the boys back and saw them come back and he knocked him with the car by the door.

"He bumped him away from me and he hit the building as well.

"He got the boy away."

Police are investigating the disturbance at the Master Cabs taxi office in the early hours of Sunday morning, which the owner has described as "like the OK Corral".

Master Cabs boss Paul Roberts told the Star there was a huge disturbance outside the offices in Great Western Crescent.

He said Donna had been "grabbed by the throat and has a bruised shoulder".

He added: "The police told her the guy was facing an assault charge, criminal damage to the lock on the door, assault on her and affray." Mr Roberts estimated the damage caused by his taxi driver was in the region of £800 to £1,000, but doesn't hold the driver culpable at all.

He said: "She called the drivers back to assist her. They came back quickly, one driver came and bumped the male in question and knocked him away.

"No action was taken against the taxi driver as he was rushing back to Donna's aid.

"He was failing to stop due to severe weather conditions. He went into the office, causing structural damage."

Police received a call just before 2am. Sergeant Justin Evans said: "There were reports of fighting in the offices of a local taxi firm.

"One man had to be taken to hospital for treatment for head and facial injuries.

"Officers are continuing with inquiries and if anyone has any information I would ask them to get in touch."

Call Llanelli police on 101.
