How many of this group would like a service charge put within the meter by your licensing authority. So you won't get a tip but a service charge fixed into the fare. Your views please.

That's akin to a price rise.

No thanks; I'll take my chances with the customers. Frequently, tips are higher than the standard 10% rule of thumb which I presume the yoiur service charge would be.

Also, there are those out there who would object to a record of anything over the standard tariff!

actually its not my proposal its Bob Oddys of the London Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) he said hes had drivers phoning and asking for this to be put on to the meter.

I have always been against service charges being added to anything. If you are doing a job that you choose to do and you are getting paid a rate that you are happy with, then that should be enough. Now if you decide that you will do more than is expected of you and the person is happy with that then they may give you a tip and that is and should always be at their discretion.

A fixed tip is akin to an increased tariff.

If that's what you want, then apply for it.

Oh, and if I was a punter I would get the right hump with a fixed service charge.

The fare is the fare. Whether or not to proffer a tip is absolutely at the discretion of the paying passenger.

To suggest a "fixed" service charge is lunacy.

The polite, efficient, friendly, functionary in any service industry is deserving of a greater gratuity than the bog standard or below standard operative.

This goes for Waiters, Stewards, Doormen (in the traditional sense, not the "heavy security man"), Porters, as well as for the "Christmas Box" for Postmen, Coalmen, Paperboys (and girls), Dustmen and the like.

Those that do more, deserve more.

If it should become part of the Tariff, would the passenger be correct in witholding the "service fee" if they considered that the service had not been provided? I think that this would be right myself.

Bottom line, leave the Status Quo.

Is that legal? If they flag you down or approach you on a rank you have to take them. What reason would you have for not picking up one of the best bands in the world.

a service charge on a CC will count towards "sales" total, take cash instead...... kushty

Definitely against tips should always be the customers choice adding it into the meter price is tantamount to a fares increase and could decrease trade if the punters take exception to it
