County MP puts in expenses claim for £750 he spent on 15 taxi rides

COUNTY MP Sir Peter Tapsell spent £750 on 15 taxi rides between Grantham railway station and his constituency home in the first three-and-a-half months after the general election. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) yesterday released a detailed breakdown of MP's expense claims between May 7 and August 31.

The documents showed that the Conservative MP for Louth and Horncastle had claimed for 15 taxi journeys between his constituency home in Roughton, near Woodhall Spa, and Grantham railway station costing the taxpayer £50 for each journey.

Overall, Sir Peter claimed £7,412.49 in expenses during the three-and-a-half month period - the highest amount of any MP in Lincolnshire.

Lincoln MP Karl McCartney claimed £6,367.30 during the latest quarter, which was exclusively spent on staffing costs due to him being new in office. Fellow new MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham Stephen Phillips claimed £5,121.80, of which £3,877.50 was spent on staffing costs. He also made claims for stationery and travel.

Gainsborough MP Edward Leigh spent £567.54 on a print drum and printer ink, the documents showed. Nationally, MPs were paid £3.1 million in expenses in the last quarter. None of the four Lincolnshire Conservative MPs were available for comment yesterday.

However, leader of the Labour group at Lincolnshire County Council, Rob Parker, said as Mr McCartney and Mr Phillips were new into office it was too early to tell whether they were claiming an appropriate amount in expenses.

Mr Parker said: "It's always difficult to take one particular claim and reflect on it being excessive, reasonable or modest and I think we can only do that over a period of time. "I would not want to comment on an individual's spending until after a year.

"But I do think that MPs have realised the public does not want to see them making unreasonable claims and this also applies to councillors. "Let's hope that all MPs will bear in mind what their public want and are reasonable in the claims they put in."

Leader of the Liberal Democrats group at Lincolnshire County Council, John Marriott, said MPs should not be claiming expenses at all. He said: "If I was a lawmaker I could pay MPs a salary and I would not allow any expenses at all. While it is open to abuse it would be far easier if they were given a decent salary and could not claim expenses."

That makes sense to me although I was under the impression that they were given a decent salary as it is

I have taken Edward Leigh home, and he haggled, so I suppose he save the public account money, and should be commended.

Former Labour MP David Chaytor has pleaded guilty to three charges relating to his expenses claims.

Chaytor, 61, the former MP for Bury North, was charged with false accounting totalling just over £20,000.

He claimed rent for his own flat in London and rent for a house in Bury, which was owned by his mother.

He would have been the first Parliamentarian to stand trial over his expenses but changed his plea before it was due to start on Monday.

My vote goes to all them who get a stretch inside for fiddling their expenses.

The MPs have already pre-empted that possibility by almost completely eliminating short term Jail sentences....Crafty Twa*ts....

And Still they are putting Bog roll down as expenses....dear god, can't they Sh*ite in their own time and at their own expense just like the rest of us????
