But the profit has never been officially acknowleged, so either that can of worms is opened up or no one has paid anything for a plate, so why should new issues have to pay £30k when incumbent plate holders pay nothing?

That's like the Govt saying that to licence a new private car should cost £30k but those already licenced get off Scot free - do you think that's a runner, even if it could solve the Govt's deficit problems?

After all, it's the public who pay the price one way or another - stealth tax(i) on wheels and all that :D

Let the debate commence \:D/

BTW Reggie, a plate or medallion system means no more than that the taxis are licenced, so you'll have to refine your terminology.

After all, you wouldn't want to cause confusion when appearing in front of the Holyrood committee scrutinising the legislation, would you?

And Mr Casey, when doing likewise don't call the MSPs 'retards'. That may not be far off the mark, but it wouldn't portray either yourself or the taxi trade in a good light.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if you'd be compelled to appear, but it might cause a constitutional upset if you refused :D

I brush up quite well you know, I've been told this on at least 29 occasions.

But I fear I wont be able to bite my lip, and whilst I may be tempted to call politicians all and sundry, I haven't accused them of rape and suchlike.

Although I do believe they are partial to the odd amount of pillaging.

Totally different to the options i'm about

The Trade in EDINBURGH not Aberdeen has gone to far with plate value's, the council will not go down the road like Aberdeen and de-restrict especially when there is a way like New York to make money out it's taxi trade

The option of de-restriction only opens the door to profiteers and infiltrators and especially in Edinburgh, it's too much of a risk

I'm sure there is profiteering now going on in Dundee and Aberdeen, infiltration by organised crime will also become a problem if not now but soon, care to elaborate or are you one of the above

So we are all due a rebate for paying tax on my investment or for paying capital gains when plates have been sold on

Sellers do pay capital gains

AliT you have paid havn't you? You may though be entitled to a rebate as Caledonian Cabbie indicates these cost's when buying or selling a plate are not officially acknowledged :?

No Reggie it's not me that's denying licences values, it's officialdom that doesn't like these things out in the open, at least when it suits.

But plateholders would realise a capital LOSS - which can be set against other gains - when the plates are rescinded, so what's the problem?

You seem to miss the point that Dougie is talking about an entirely new mindset.

The council isnt denying anything because there's nothing to deny.

The taxi is a market stall, bought and sold like a market stall, the council decide, by way of survey the size of the marketplace.

The system you people want does not work, especially in a place like edinburgh.....so why shouldnt a council limit and sell licenses accordingly?

The driver would be content in so far as the amount of work is guaranteed, and he can at any point buy in.

The only people in Edinburgh it would affect are the likes of the carpetbaggers.......which at the moment appears to be a person called Jackie who cannot even drive a cab ffs

Last time I checked, Edinburgh was still in Scotland so any changes to the law - a great many of which would be required for your New york idea to be legal - will affect the whole of Scotland, not just Edinburgh. Unless you are proposing a new Act for Edinburgh only?
Give the chance to make money to any council and they will grab it.

Disagree completely.
Where there is no plate value, there is no profit to profiteer from.

No, I am not one of the above. Are you?
Profiteering here is confined mostly to the saloon plate market which has been restricted since 1995.
Organised crime seems to favour PH operations in places with a restricted taxi trade. Probably why it's not much of a problem here.
Limit anything and you create a demand which people will pay for. Whether that is plates or medallions, Scotland or New York

But the service, according to the OFT, is worse.

When i paid for my plate i incorporated, it cost me £1000 but if i had put my plate in my name only the cost at the time if memory serves me right was around the £250 mark, the council profited more from incorporation, this has changed now
The council by allowing the incorporation of plates knew/accepted that plates where being traded, the council would find this hard to deny any knowledge of plate value's

Another point is the fact that probably 80% of all Edinburgh plates have been traded for amounts ranging from £15k too £50k, there already is an acceptance within the trade that this is the way it is, your view concerning fairness between past and future or plates for free too £30k a plate doesn't stand up.

I'm not dishing your comments they are significant to the debate and as you say Lets debate
