Taxi drivers face prosecution

FOUR more taxi-drivers are being prosecuted following the latest operation to ensure the safety of passengers.

A joint operation involving Merseyside Police's Roads Policing team and City Council licensing enforcement officers, took place over a week-endto ensure taxi drivers and their vehicles complied with the relevant legislation and licence conditions.

Four drivers have been reported for plying for hire and associated insurance offences. Two of the drivers are from Liverpool, one from Wirral and one from Knowsley

Three of their vehicles were seized by the police and impounded.

Private hire vehicles can only carry passengers if they have booked them in advance. If they have not done so they are not insured to pick up passengers.

Councillor Christine Banks, Chair of the City Council's Licensing Committee, who witnessed the operations said: "I saw for myself how the police and our licensing officers are working to ensure the safety of passengers.

"In the Christmas period many more people rely on taxis to get around and there is a real risk that people going out for a night will use any type of taxi if they are prepared to carry them even if they not properly licensed to do so.

"We would urge passengers, for their own safety, only to use either hackney carriages or pre-booked private hire taxis as these are properly licensed.

"We will be carrying out more operations of this type with the police to ensure safety."
