As far as I am concerned it's the goodwill of the business that should be sold not the plate

I think the Royden case put the goodwill issue firmly to bed.

Bedtime reading  Well it'll have to wait cos I've got my nose stuck into a good confession at the minute

[edited by admin] it!, I'm on a roll now. (The Bells is kickin' in). What's really getting to me, (please refer to the previous brackets), is Gary & Jim.
I know it was kinda' daft to mention "The Whitehoose", (the first bracketed line would also explain this). But, to get invited to somewhere called the "Beanscene" for a "Latte" ( remember, I'm the guy fae' the Whitehoose). "THE BEANSCENE !!, for" LATTE !!", and then Jim invites me me to meet with him,( S.U.D. POST), at "THE PINK TRIANGLE !!"
FFS!. Erm.... communication on the Forum is just fine by me lads,

Dearie me, the BIG John Lawson can't do face to face.

So what was with the big hardman gig? Even a hibs casual wouldn't baulk at a sundown meeting at the pink triangle.

I've been campaigning for a fair number of years. More years than I care to think about, but we've done it on a shoestring.

Not once, yup not even once, has anyone attempted to articulate the argument to my face.

The reason? Because there is no argument against where we're headed. It is inevitable.

The trade knows this but rather than develop the quality controls we need, it would rather just try to kill the messenger.

You're all failures. What we're saying is going to happen.

We should be embracing it and moving on to the next stage. Increasing the service to the customer, and charging them more for it.

Faced too Faced the pair of you's a couple of times and got you to admit you are just out to screw the trade

Jim how can you say flooding the market with plates will wipe out PHC, prove it :?: Give us examples of other CITIE'S similar to Edinburgh that de-restriction has wiped out the PHC trade, C'mon :?:

You say PHC meet the demand we black cabs cannot meet, but the problem with demand is Street work, Work outwith the control of the PHC trade, so again prove to us what demand does PHC actually meet :?:

The way to meet any un-met demand is controlled growth and skull admits it himself that if the council grew the trade with increases per year, demand would finally be met and without flooding or in your words screwing the market.

If we bring in NEW LEGISLATION(Caledonian Cabbie) and allow our council to make money out of plates by introducing the NYystem we could over the next 5 years expect say 200 more black cab licences, this i believe would be more fairer to the trade as it would be survey's of demand that would justify the amount of plates issued, controlled growth over de-restriction is the solution to making the PHC trade in Edinburgh insignificant.

Money raised by our council could go to improving our cab office, paying for survey's of demand etc

Jim your game is up, it's over Happy New York (year) :D

I dont know......an amendment to section 16 of the the 1985 transport act or an amendment to section 10 and 12 of the Civic Government Scotland Act 1982 in relation to the allocation of licenses and the fees charged.

Shouldnt be too hard.

Indeed, in England we could look through the King judgement and correct the bits the judge didnt like;

Manchester vs. King!

And it would take five years just to get it passed.
That's if you could actually find enough politicians, north or south of the border, prepared to back such a selfish protectionist scheme.
It's an election year for the Scottish parliament BTW.
Want to bet none of them will have reform of taxi legislation in their manifestos?

I dont know gusmac, you're such a cynic......here's me trying to think of ways to keep childrens nurseries and old folks homes open.......whilst the likes of alistair and co have pocketed many thousands of pounds......and I'm the bad guy?

Section 12 (1) would be an easy addition to the CGSA 1982.

Allowing for the setting of a fee on initial grant which is determined by an independent survey and such a fee would be permitted to go into the local authorities general fund.

Seems to me, its better keeping a care home open in this manner, than allowing carpetbaggers to profit and keep the cycle going.

Perhaps, the title of this thread should have been, Is Captain Cab, as mad as a bag of ferrets?

You can guess the answer. RAPE IS REASONABLE.     :D

To be spent on council priorities like lesbian encounter groups and the ilk.
You really think this money would be spent on what the public considered worthy?

Also you risk opening Pandora's box here CC. Why stop at initial grant fees if they go down this route........you could fund far more kids nurseries and old folks homes on the back of taxi licensing........

In the eyes of some, the carpetbaggers are already peeking inside pandoras box.

The choice seems pretty stark......one poster on here has made many thousands of pounds from getting free plates and selling them in Edinburgh........strangely enough this cash would have been enough to fund a council run local charity called 'Womans Aid'.

I think the idea has merits.

Many posters on here have made millions of pounds buying and selling plates which were given out free to someone. Are you saying it's ok to profiteer if you paid for the plate or if you support the current system?

Then why not campaign for a pilot scheme - just to see how it goes?
I suggest somewhere like Carlisle........ 8)

Many posters?

Apart from the edinburgh 3 can you actually name any-more?

I'm saying plates are sold as soon as they are screwed onto the back of vehicles for many thousands of pounds, I'm also saying councils are going to be closing day centres and nurseries due to budget cuts.

I'm saying what is the difference between giving a council £30K and buying a vehicle......than giving someone else £40 to £50K for the same?

I'm saying a regulated system will ensure the buyer has a chance of a return on his investment.....as the taxi market is stable.

lol......the english tend to test things in scotland old chap

I don't doubt it. Many more plates are sold on for profit after the purchaser has used it for a while, milking rentals from the trade or even driving it themselves.
You seem to draw a distiction between them which I do not.
Profiteering is wrong, regardless of who profits.

Funding day centres and nurseries are not the taxi trade's responsibility. You and Dougie are the ones who want the trade to shoulder the council's load.
BTW Just how many plates would CEC need to sell in order to fund every day centre and nursery in the city? Two or three hundred a year?
What do they do if they can't find that many takers?
Add a couple of grand to the price of renewals?

No difference except the price. Both are abhorrent in a supposedly free market economy.

Regulated by survey? Unless the surveys are rigged, you'd be lucky to raise enough money a year to give the needy of Auld Reekie a bag of crisps each.

This proposal has nothing to do with funding day centres or nurseries and everything to do with maintaining the status quo.

Not exactly news CC.
The English have always used their Empire to test unsavory things.
A-bombs, poll tax, concentration camps, genocide etc etc.
We just happen to be one of the few remaining parts of that Empire.
With the full aquiescence of people like Dougie of course.
