A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND shopper waited four hours for a taxi from Sainsbury’s during the icy weather.

Pamela Horn, who suffers from a muscle spasm condition called dystonia, leaving her unable to walk, visited the Lord Street store on December 23.

But when she came out of the supermarket at 4.30pm the thick snow meant there was a long wait for taxis.

Sainsbury’s staff called a cab and made cups of coffee for her but when the 44-year-old realised she had left her medication at home she began to panic.

“I couldn’t stop crying,” she said.

After two hours a taxi arrived for Pamela – but somebody else got in it.

Store greeter Gemma Douglass, who has worked at Sainsbury’s for seven years, looked after Pamela during her wait to get home on the Promenade.

Meanwhile Pamela’s nursing home was becoming concerned about where she had got to and tried to send out a minibus to bring her home.

Ex-Greenbank High pupil Gemma told the Visiter the taxi queue was the full length of the shop.

“I got asked to walk the street to flag taxis while dressed as Mrs Santa,” the 33-year-old said.

But with the snow, Christmas week and buses not running, extreme pressure was put on the taxi companies.

John Whiteside, whose firm Yellow Top Taxis has 16 wheelchair vehicles, said they did all they could in difficult conditions and their six telephone lines were constantly lit up.

“We were trying to move as many people as we could,” he said. Tony Crabtree, secretary of North Sefton Hackney Carriage Association, said journeys took four times longer than normal.

At one time, a care home would send a resident with a carer in thier own minibus, obviously with cost cutting this isnt an option now?

care homes cost FROM £400 per person per week

That's equality for you There was a time when specialist transport would have been laid on. Now they have WAVs the need is no longer there for specialist transport so everybody is expected to wait in the queue

Round here they pay anything from £500 per week depending on the care they want. The missus has her grandma in one due to her suffering several strokes, she pays over £650 a week.

my mum and dad are in the same care home with single rooms opposite each other, dad had a stroke but is mobile and 88, mum isnt so good but requires only basic care, its a council run place, they had no money or estate to sell so its paid for by the social, and they take thier pensions off them too, even dads work pension and leave em with £20 each pocket money per week, there are different levels of care from residential to nursing,etc

something to look forward to eh?....

Nursing homes are not prisons. Just because she is a wheelchair user does not mean that she needs to be accompanied everywhere.

Everyone was waiting in the snow; roads gridlocked, drivers going home not prepared to risk an accident, every man & their dog ringing for a taxi & claiming to be a regular, etc, etc.

So half of the four hour wait was attributable to Sainbury's staff who were 'looking after Pamela' & not looking out for HER taxi, which having not made contact with the booked passenger took someone else!!

You can hardly blame the taxi driver for two hour of the wait can you?

Thanks Brummie for the "Equality" not "Priority" quote. I will have to use that.

if theres equality, how come i have to park further from Tescos front door than the disabled and "with kids" drivers?
