Plan for roof-top taxi adverts

CARDIFF’S taxis could soon resemble New York’s famous yellow cabs under a proposed money-making scheme.

Plans have been submitted for illuminated advertising boxes to be mounted on the capital’s private hire taxis and hackney carriages.

Lewis Smith is proposing two-sided straight pyramid boxes for private hire vehicles and triangular boxes for hail-and-ride cabs to help passengers differentiate between the two.

Mr Smith said the boxes would reduce accidents as it would make the taxis more visible.

However, Mathab Khan, pictured, from the Cardiff Hackney Carriage Association, said it was “totally unacceptable” and would confuse the travelling public. Dragon Taxis managing director Gareth Owen added: “I’m not interested in our taxis looking like a circus sideshow.”

The proposal goes before the council’s public protection committee on Tuesday.

Just another angle to dupe the public into believing that they are getting into licensed Taxi.

Love to see one of those things on top of a TX. :D

But methinks confusion would occur if PH had massive roof-lights.

Although I am a fan of little ones. :-$

Even if it is agreed that they could have the adverts surely they can't be made to have them, so if you don't want one don't have one

Toots the PH boys and girls will love anything that gives the impression at night that the the PH vehicle is a taxi, and is able to pick up off of the streets legally.

I think a lot of the WAVs will not be able to have them due to low walkways in new development apartment blocks, and also low restrictive entrance points to various car parks. And no, I do not want to be getting in and out of my cab taking the bluddy thing off and putting it back on again.

We had them in Brum about 20 years ago & they were on top of TXs.

They didn't last long; every driver that contracted to have one broke his contract.

The wind resistance was so great that the mpg dropped like a stone.

Don't have them on FFS!!

I not sure I entirely agree with you about this. I can't think of anything I'd rather not have on the top of my vehicle and I don't think many of the others here would either. We don't need to look like taxis at night people try to flag us down anyway, they don't care
