When I first drove a taxi the owner expected me to do 14 hours on the Saturday.

Of course, he had a good job and wouldn't be seen dead actually driving it, but the friendly council had usefully stopped actual drivers getting their own plate since his days in the saddle.

And he also told people that he was so good to his drivers that he let them work as many hours as they wanted.

Nothing to do with the fact that he worked on a %age commission basis

Aye Dougie the Smith stuff will think working 14 hours is OK. No concern for the dead passengers when the car goes off the road. But then Dougie doesn't care about customers, to him they're just a cash machine.

Thing is, what's the point of driving around without picking up a fare, on a Thursday when every cab in the town is out because it's late shopping night, burning duel at £1.31 a Litre?

Driving your own vehicle would let you go home and come out when it's busy, when the punters need us.

Anyway, my crap nite last nite was made up with a good Wednesday. The two balance out to what I would normally expect. So it's not a problem.

It's just a pity that those on this forum don't have the wit to recognise the difference between the de-restriction argument and the rank bad handling of our economy by government.

And it's easier to blame me for all the ills of the trade and tocuh forelocks than to put brains in gear and realise where the real problems lie.

Ah but see jim, your constantly seen on the Waverley rank an rarely seen elsewhere unless it's one of those nights like the festival where everyone on the streets is looking for a cab

You harp on about serving the public needs but your never seen doing that, only your own. Never seen you ranked up in the areas where the bars and clubs are

Maybe it's also down to the fact that between 1am and 3 midweek, not alot is happening, so you call it a night rather than find a rank outside a bar/club and look for work. and being a street car you rarely get any airport runs that start around 3.30 in the morning. In fact, I usually make the same amount between 3am when the clubs empty until 6 than I do in the previous 7-8 hours before it, even midweek!

But then you won't join a radio circuit as you won't be told what work to do and when

Mr Taylor why did you change your mind from wanting a cap to now wanting de-restriction is it because you sold your plate(s) and now you want another one or more from the Council. Yer a muppet mate how nobody has lost the plot with you is beyond belief! Take it you want everybody struggling to make a living and fighting to get on a rank

You and mycab live on your knees because you deserve nothing less. It's the begging bowl mentality all over again. Edinburgh is a restricted market, and everyone is struggling here too, only the drivers more than the owners. And you think putting a cap on numbers will change all this. You are dreaming mate.

Without a united trade, proper legal representation and the right of direct action to dictate your own professional worth. You will always be seen as the shi* on the publics' shoes. And you want politicians to take you seriously, I, like them, wouldn't pish on you if you were on fire.

You are pathetic.Image

Which means exactly nothing, no substance just abuse.

Why didn't you and your mate not mention Cardiff re-regulating last year?

The police supported re-regulation.....due to the serious problems the number of taxis had created.

You failed to mention the 21 drivers in Ashfield who lost their jobs for one month because their council couldn't cope with the effects of too many taxis.

Anyone might think that someone like Madjim who has by his own admission driven a cab for 23 years and didn't actually say he owned one at some point.....which may not be the case......could be kind of viewed as a bit of a f*cking disaster area.......23 years in a job without promotion???? ffs his kids must be proud.

Madjim's letter didn't mention many things........and those things were noted.

Council's go through periods of restriction and de-restriction. It's nothing new. Remember Dublin CC, 100K plate “values” and the plug got pulled. We have never claimed that de-restriction works, but then again, neither does a restriction. We advocate a third way, where the trade is united and takes control over its own affairs, instead of going cap in hand to the council. If it can't happen then so be it, we'll take our chances along with everyone else.

If a driver is qualified and paying a rental, there is no reason why he should be denied the choice to own or drive. :-|
