On a Skoda keep a firm grip of the steering wheel as you loose power steering
Mine decided to pack up tonight, battery light first then every warning light came on, engine cut out bump, started it strait away as I was still moving and the steering went as I was going round some bends
Called AA they came jump started it gave the alternator a clout with a hammer and you could hear it suddenly start charging the battery, don't know how long it will last for so getting a new alternator first thing Monday and not taking it out till then, don't want to tempt fate

If you can swap them without her seeing - you can blame her for breaking it.

Re conditioned may be worth a try! all they are doing is putting new inners into it. If it is a reputable dealer then they will give you a guarantee of 1 year if you are an every day motorist, OR 6 months if you are a taxi. The saving should be in the region of £120/130.

There's a place round here who will re con the old starter / altenator for £40, they will fit new bearings and bushes and give you a 12 months warranty.
