My mother was driving home from Selby a couple of years ago when she crashed into the back of a stationary wagon. There was no obvious reason for the accident, the car had no mechanical defects and she said she saw the wagon slow down but the next thing she remembers is been asked if she was ok by another motorist after she'd gone into the back of the wagon. She didn't have a clue as to what had happened in the seconds between. She underwent tests and it was found she had Sleep Apnea. Although she hereself didn't feel tired, her body was fatigued due to the breathing problems she was having while sleeping and as a result, just shut down. She now sleeps with a kind of ventilator on which keeps her airways open thus allowing her an unbroken nights sleep.

Sleep Apnea can go undetected for years, decades even as you don't really know you have it. The only way it can be determined is through an overnight sleep test in which they take various measurements.

The council need to make him do a medical, based on his falling to sleep condition.
