York pig driver [those who have been in the army will remember that a pig was a Humber armoured vehicle, remember] [black cab] causes accident at prime time Friday night with passengers onboard

In a 20 mph school area a black cab driver in his 60's who is well known for falling asleep at any moment, wiped out school safety metal railings, council waste bin, damaged hedge and came to a stop at a tree, along with speed humps

in defence he claims something "snapped" on his steering, but his vehiclle was only taxi inspected days ago, but other drivers know better

what should happen, what should be done, he is not known to work excessive houirs but may have a medical problem, to which cannot be brought up on the atandard driving medical

he often has to be woke up on the rank

your thoughts

We had a driver like that years ago; we called him 'Sleepeasy'.

Narcolepsy might be the problem.

My mother was driving home from Selby a couple of years ago when she crashed into the back of a stationary wagon. There was no obvious reason for the accident, the car had no mechanical defects and she said she saw the wagon slow down but the next thing she remembers is been asked if she was ok by another motorist after she'd gone into the back of the wagon. She didn't have a clue as to what had happened in the seconds between. She underwent tests and it was found she had Sleep Apnea. Although she hereself didn't feel tired, her body was fatigued due to the breathing problems she was having while sleeping and as a result, just shut down. She now sleeps with a kind of ventilator on which keeps her airways open thus allowing her an unbroken nights sleep.

Sleep Apnea can go undetected for years, decades even as you don't really know you have it. The only way it can be determined is through an overnight sleep test in which they take various measurements.

The council need to make him do a medical, based on his falling to sleep condition.

There is a clear public safety issue here I think the council should ask for a medical report

Is this the same driver who entered the paraplegic games in a wheel chair?
