Words like justice, freedom and dignity, are all abstract in their meanings. It all depends on your knowledge, understanding, and personal circumstances. They can mean many different things to different people. Toots, is not wrong in some respects but is in many others.

To paraphrase Plato, I don't know what dignity is, but I know what dignity is not.

It is not being denied your right to equality before the law, or the presumption of innocence before guilt. The right not to be forced to become a witness against yourself, or should I say, your right to remain silent when faced with a malicious allegation. It is not coming to a decision without first being presented with corroboration or credible evidence and believing what you like. And it is not denying someone their right to a fair hearing through the partiality of the process.

You see Toots. These are all fundamental rights that everyone is supposed to have, even taxi drivers.

So where does a taxi drivers dignity lie when faced with a malicious allegation. Perhaps in spilling his guts before the Cab Inspector in some desperate bid to keep his licence? I know. It must be up before the Council Regulatory Committee begging to councillors when your fundamental rights simply don't exist.

Taxi drivers have no rights and are stripped of whatever little dignity they might have, and it's no accident. The council and the Cab Inspector want to keep their boot on your throat.

As I said before, you can't be deprived of something if you are too ignorant to know what that something is. In that respect Toots, your dignity remains intact, at least at some level, probably with your chums.

Definition based on your right of opinion of course

Yeah that's why I told him to buy a dinghy

Toots, it's of no surprise to me. You don't understand the meaning of the word, dignity. I'm starting to believe that you and Dougie were separated at birth.

I was actually asked to start this thread to prove whether or not taxi drivers know what it is to be treated with respect.

A friend of mine, a professional individual, is of the opinion that taxi drivers, for the most part, lack the intelligence to know what having dignity really means. I think it fair to say. You can't be deprived of something if you are too ignorant to know what that something is.

This would go some way to explaining why taxi drivers have no intelligent consensus of how to protect or improve their interests and social status.

I think he is right. :-|

I'm treated with dignity and respect by all that know me. I put forward a possible reason as to why some drivers allow certain things to happen. It wasn't what I allow to happen and it appears to me that you missed the concept that it was only a suggestion yet again. Sometimes I say on here what I believe to be true and sometimes I'll speculate and just give an opinion. You really need to read what I say and try to learn the difference. The dinghy comment was just a little humour, but, I keep forgetting you don't have much of a sense of humour really do you

Toots, intelligent professional people would be up in arms if one of their own (irrespective of your personal feeling about the individual) were treaded without dignity. They would recognise the insult in a heartbeat. It would be WAR. They would not accept any action by any group or individual that could possibly degrade their professional status. Taxi drivers in general, including you, have little or no idea what I am talking about. This thread is not about how your chums relate to you as an individual. It's about professional and public opinion and their perception of what it means to be a taxi driver.

My battle with the Cab Inspector and the Council is because I won't accept what you can't recognise.

Once again, my friend was right, dignity for you people, is a foreign concept. You simply lack the intelligence to know any better. :-|

Well I wasn't just referring to my 'chums' when I said everybody I know has respect for me, I was also referring to professional people with whom I deal with on a regular basis. Having said that on the whole the public here do have respect for taxi drivers. Generally as a rule respect has to earned it's not just given. How many of the public have respect for solicitors, estate agents or even our politicians. As for the supposed dignity that you talk about that the intelligent professional people enjoy, it can be bought and sold like everything else.

As I see it the council knew what you would do and even though it went against their own procedure they did it anyway. It was wrong for them to do that and foolish for you to allow them. Having said that I don't think you're entirely bothered because apparently you needed the excuse to get out of this trade, just leaving the trade without a fuss just wouldn't be acceptable to you. I hope you take pride in the fact that you think you are one of the most intelligent taxi drivers without a licence

I stand by what I said earlier regarding the reasons why some drivers allow things to happen. Putting your families needs before the needs of the trade is not something to be ashamed of IMO

Happy retirement

Okay Toots, you've actually made a couple of fair points, in a sort of jumbled up way. :?

However, for the benefit of the viewers could you explain what it means as a taxi driver to have, and to be treated with, dignity, in your mind at least?
It's a simple enough question Toots.

:-|

Dignity is such a subjective matter to discuss. It depends on so many different variables such as sex, gender, race, upbringing etc etc. Violation of a persons dignity would depend on so many things. I'm not entirely sure if dignity is the appropriate word to be using considering the circumstances mentioned at the beginning of this thread. However I will indulge your request. For the council to violate my dignity they would perhaps have to insist on a dress code that is of an overly sexualised nature or perhaps they insisted that a label advertising an alleged misdemeanor was affixed to my vehicle. Some drivers may find that their dignity is offended by having to drive pink vehicles, I however wouldn't

\with regard to being treated with respect I would expect the council to follow their own procedures in dealing with matters relating to myself, ensuring that I am aware of those procedures and treating all matters in a confidential manner. Respect is a two way street IMO

You do realise you are attempting to craft an argument in defence of councils denying taxi drivers their fundamental rights? Then you claim to understand what it is to be treated with dignity, and yet can't see the contradiction.

Are you insane?

You waited all day to come up with that tripe in some vain attempt to defend the indefensible.

Toots, this is no longer about rights or dignity, and the way councils treat taxi drivers. This is about you and your low self-esteem. You are back in defence mechanism mode. You really need to sort out your man problem.

I think it is obvious to everyone you and Dougie have serious personal problems. With you Toots, it's a man thing. The minute you think you are being slapped down you lose the thread of the argument and just write any old shi* in an attempt to maintain your position. I don't know you Toots. Your past is not my problem, but it is a problem.

Dougie, seems to see everything as a threat to his identity and his wee red taxi. He would kiss councillors on the ars* if it meant protecting his illusion.

Although, taxi drivers are being denied their rights and are treated like [edited by admin] you would argue for the status quo.

You just can't make this sort of thing up.

I see you've resorted back to the personal insults again, it never does take you very long does it  Don't you worry about my self esteem it's just fine now and I didn't wait all day to post anything I simply had something better to do. I don't see why you think I'm attempting to craft an arguement in defence of my council either. I think you're just changing the goal posts. Firstly it's about dignity then it's repect, then it's rights and now it's about your percieved opinion of my self esteem. I think it's just a rehash of the same old arguement

Toots, I knew someone like you a few years back. And she like you would take up a position on a particular subject and no matter how ridiculous she made herself look, could not be swayed from her opinion. To save her husband's embarrassment, we all learned to let the subject go rather than debating the point any further. It came to light that her father and a boy friend in a previous relationship would constantly humiliate her and put her down in public. I would take a bet her story is not dissimilar at least in some respects to your own.

Incidentally, it was the drink that seemed to set her off.

She was a pain in the fecking ars*.

You know. You could be taking about a particular subject, and one minute she would be making a valid point then suddenly, it was like everyone in the room was against her. She seemed to go deaf and that was it for the rest of the night.
:? Very strange. :?

So you have met my mother in law...get a grip Skull, it is in understanding this that can set you out as a gentleman of dignity...look for the gems of knowledge to be found therein, learn to dance in the rain when thunder looms above.

So her excuse was drink, what's yours? For your information I don't really drink much and this section is not one I would visit if I had had a drink Her story is not remotely like mine. My father adored me and my ex treated me like a princess in public, but, he had a drink problem in so far as his jealously of my brother would manifest itself when he had drink and I was the person around at the time. It had an effect then but not anymore so whatever you think you're achieving by continuely reminding me of this is anybodies guess

Garry you have all the dignity of a beached whale. You are trying so hard to sound like an intelligent articulate adult yet you end up just floundering, stuck for a coherent argument to make.

You started out by claiming you would outwit not only the council and Cab Inspector, but the system itself. Sadly you have proved it was yet another thing beyond your capabilities. We still await your first 'victory.'

A person with dignity is by definition worthy of respect from his peers and equally he respects his peers no matter their stance.

Your behaviour towards others shows that you have no dignity to show let alone lose.

By failing to acknowledge a fair procedure where all you had to do was state unequivocally that you refuted an allegation you lost your credibility. That is why no lawyer will touch your 'human rights' case.
The balance of probability is the test of the allegation and your conduct only ever served to make it look more probable.

This is more like it. I shall answer your posts in a short while. Unfortunately, I've got things to do.

I will say this though, I only treat "taxi drivers" in the manor they deserve. In that respect, I am no different to your councils.

Swannee, explain where I have it wrong? We can discuss me, at a later date.

So boys and girls, you know what it is to be treated with dignity by your beloved Council. Even though you are afforded no rights or protections whatsoever. Your choice is simple, Spill your guts in the vain hope your hapless Cab Inspector takes pity on you, or grovel to the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker.
