The Minimum Wage from 01/10/11 is, as many have noted, £5.93 per hour.

However, as a refugee from the Catering Trade, I must pass on to you a piece of knowledge that is well known there and is often used in that Sector of the World of Work.

It is that an Employer can, quite legally, take your Tips into account when calculating your Hourly Rate of Pay and still be on the right side of the law.

In other words, if your Employer calculates that you have earned £40 in Tips during that 40 Hour Week, he/she is, quite legally, allowed to pay you £4.93 an hour and your Pay will be still be in accordance with the Legal Minimum Wage.

It is quite common, here in Ayr, for Drivers to be paid £5.00 an hour. For their Employer to be charged with paying below the legal Minimum Wage. The Driver would have to 'prove' that he was bringing in less than £0.93 per hour in Tips, on average.

Now, I'm sure that everyone here declares their Tips! But, even so, I'm sure that it would be quite difficult to prove that the average rate of Tipping was below that 93p level.

Try working in a Student City...the tips generate a negative value.
The only time this may not be true is when the future of British finest ask how much from each of 5 to cover the £6.85 fare...easy says he...£2!

Nemisis ~ I'm sure that it happens.

Some of you will remember Maxwell's, a fancy Burger Bar in Central Glasgow.

Well, the best Stations, that is those tables that a waiter is allocated to serve, were always awarded to those who worked fastest and communicated best with the Customers.

The Top Station was said to be able to earn £80, or more, in Tips each Shift and was much sought after. Maybe you're in the wrong business because the Customers there were mainly Students.

Now I'm sure that Glasgow's Finest rarely have a negative Tip Income, although is must happen occasionally. In fact I'd be very surprised if you lot did not easily exceed what we, in Ayr, consider a good result, particularly on a Saturday Back Shift.

Here's one for ya, new starters at MacDonalds are on £6.45 an hour, we might as well be flipping burgers at the moment.
