Law-flouting taxi drivers now face double penalties

TAXI drivers across the borough face double the penalty if caught illegally plying for hire after councillors decided a bigger deterrent was needed.

Dudley Council’s taxis committee has decided to double the minimum penalty private hire vehicle drivers can expect for plying for hire. The starting point for a first conviction has been increased from two months to a four-month licence suspension.

Councillor Bob James, chairman of the taxis committee, said: “This decision shows how seriously we take the offence of plying for hire which puts passengers at serious risk. “We have extended the starting point from which a suspension of taxi licences can start for a first conviction to ensure there is an appropriate deterrent.”

Taxi users are reminded it is illegal for private hire vehicles to carry passengers if the journey has not been pre-booked. The vehicles, white saloon cars, are only insured if they are pre-booked.

As well as the suspension of a licence given out by Dudley taxis committee, any driver of a private hire vehicle caught taking customers without a booking could also end up before the courts. On conviction they could receive fines for plying for hire and driving without insurance plus up to eight penalty points on their driving licence.

The above aside, I find it amusing how the taxi trade allows councils to get away with the sh*te printed above......but similar with points systems and whatever else......

I did indeed and there's no Vikings in my family which is more the pity cos they appear to be quite an adventurous bunch albeit most of the them was ginger
