Don't get into unmarked taxis, says Bradford hackney carriage boss

A hackney carriage boss has urged people to make sure they use clearly-marked licensed vehicles after a man who posed as a taxi driver was convicted of sexual assault.

Shabir Munir, a spokesman for Bradford Hackney Carriage Drivers’ and Owners’ Association, has warned against flagging down unlicensed drivers following the conviction of Faisel Yaqoob, who was last week found guilty of assaulting a 19-year-old woman.

Mr Munir said: “Some people might be a little tipsy and get into any car available. Sometimes people assume cars are taxis when they are not. Not only is it illegal, sometimes it can be a safety issue as well.

“Considering what has happened I think this is a good time to make the public aware. The big issue is public safety, and we provide safe transportation for them. We want the public to be safe because without them we won’t be able to make a living.

“Hackney carriages can be flagged in the street anywhere in the Bradford district. We don’t have to be pre-booked. Private hire vehicles have to be reserved in advance.

“Hackney carriages in Bradford are white with green stripes. Private hire vehicles are supposed to have the company logo displayed on the car.”

Yaqoob, who was warned he faces jail, will be sentenced on Monday, October 3.

Similar to a VW Caddy Max Life, I was considering one myself as a cheaper route into multiseating, think a Galaxy will be a better option though comfort and class wise.

I think yours was probably stress related more than anything Wayne, taking on too much life problems to add to your own ones.

Anyway as far as the cabbie goes, his car looks in good condition, and most folks over the age of 40 spread a bit anyway, couple our unhealthy groundhog day lifestyle and you end up wrinkled and portly anyway, I think the guy is correct to point out the issues myself and fairplay to him for having the backbone to say to those that are killing our job daily.....we know yer about and you are going to be addressed on your illegal activities, warning the public is also a good idea, but sadly it's not getting the correct exposure, as the public doesn't surf here nor read PHM.
