Love the bit about the PH Barons not wanting a one-tier system. 8-[

Is it me or does Rowland talk like a you know what??

In my experience yes I would say our incoming calls are about 70% from Mobiles and I would say that withion a couple of years that will reach 90% since the vast majority of customers in our locality don't book ahead but phone when they need you this is a consequence of oversupply in the market because the number of days or nights in the year when the rank is empty for more than 10 minutes can be counted on one hand

I think the use of mobiles will continue to escalate replacing the use of landlines. My phone contract is £15 pm for which I get 100 minutes, 300 texts and unlimited internet access. More than enough for me. My wife has the same phone and deal. Now, we have both had mobiles for years, but we were tempted last year into this deal and love it. As a consequence we have reduced our landline package so that we get good broadband at home and free landline calls at weekends. This saved a lot and made the mobile package viable. Consequently all weekday calls are made on the mobile but increasingly we now find we rarely use the landline at all and use the mobile out of habit.

So, putting myself in the situation of someone needing a cab, under what circumstances would I actually find the neccessity to walk to a taxi rank? To be honest I struggle to think of one. I always have my mobile with me and the internet access so it opens all sorts of options to locate a cab firm. Job done.

I don't have a landline at all now.

I pay £15/month for a sim-only contract, 600 minutes and 1,000 texts.

Can't remember the last time I phoned for a cab though.

Indeed, I can't remember the last time I was in another cab at all, except for the others on the local ranks for a gossip.

In fact I think the last cab I was in was probably the Sussex-mobile.

As for the last time I actually paid for a cab, ten years at least.

And I have had five vehicles since then.

Back to the bit about mobile phones, in the post elsewhere about Birmingham court cases there is one person prosecuted for running a PH service from his car.

That's correct; he's operating without a PH operator's licence.

And Brum would not issue a mobile PH operator licence.

BC I guess he may have been more difficult to prosecute if he had an Operators Licence for his home address and had calls forwarded. I know/think this is illegal but clearly a widspread practice. I know a lot of my "day job" clients do it.

The thing is though if they do away with the distinction between PH and Hackney people like that won't need an operators license. I don't we are like everyone else round here an all hackney fleet therefore no operators license neccessary and we have stopped bothering with board operators and use call divert most of the time

I personally think possible collusion between the OFT, DFT and possibly the LC needs investigated.
