Why not just fill it up at the end of each shift?

I can't really see much point here in calculating anything other than good old mpg.

You are right, in that it is very useful to know how economical your vehicle is.

However, my only real requirement is to be able to calculate, "How much it costs me to operate", which, of course includes things like "Keeping warm in winter", "Getting home at the end of a shift", "Trips to the garage, for maintenance", that sort of extra for which I am paying, rather than the Punter.

So what useful purpose does knowing the difference between "Cost per £1 earned" in the winter and summer serve, Eddie?

It might be an interesting statistic if you like that kind of thing - and it may help pass some time if you're bored - but I can't really fathom what useful purpose it serves other than to tell you that you use more fuel in winter, which a simple mpg calculation would do.

Keeping tight tabs on your fuel consumption can reveal any problems with your vehicle, big fleets do it as a matter of course, but mpg will fall in winter due to slower warm up times, slower traffic and winter diesel (and running the engine to keep warm, get a night heater!)

if your car suddenly goes from 55mpg to 35mpg you know somethings wrong and can get it checked instead of wasting money on wasted fuel

dont let the EU hear you say that

its funny how theyve tried forcing us to go metric but miles, MPG and road signs in miles hang on, they can force us to deal in metric but cant force us to think in metric

who here says "yeah mate, its about 4 Kilometres that way"....
