Hi

Im trying to set up breakdown cover for my vw T5 9 seater inc me, and was wondering if anyone on here has a similar vehicle seating capacity and who they use, as the well known co's ie AA are only insured to carry 7 in their recovery trucks, which is no good if Im full.. for onward or relay etc or whatever they call it .. any ideas?

I have breakdown cover included with my insuarance BUT it only covers local breakdown if you break down on the way back from the airport it can be very expensive. I think if you are talking about relay service very few breakdown organisations will provide it unless you pay a big premium and in my experience the norm is to arrange an alternative vehicle to get your passengers to their destination and recover you to a nearby garage

If you have a breakdown with 8 passengers or even 4 passengers on the way to an airport, by the time the AA or RAC have got out to you, the passengers will have already missed their flight. If you breakdown the first thing you should do is to use your phone and get hold of the nearest taxi company to you and get them to take your passengers. If there is an additional cost you will probably need to pay that for the customer. I think that if you are outside of your own area you will need to use a hackney and not a PH because of the cross border issues. Once you have organised the passengers you can then concentrate on getting your vehicle and yourself recovered.

Wont make a jot of Difference where you are as your no longer the Taxi driver but the Customer if your paying for it, You have to take it on the chin, lose the fare and pay the balance of the extra cost of your Clients onwards journey....Sh!t happens sometimes. :?

I have to agree with that. If you have a plan in place so that you know what you will do that covers most eventualities there is no need to worry or worse still, PANIC. If you get to the panic stage you will be more likely to make bad decisions.
As they say, if you fail to plan, you had better plan to fail.

what contacts will a Bradford one-man band owner driver have 5 miles from Gatwick at 2am?....

best bet is to have your laptop and smartphone with you, or ring 118me and brief your missus what to do if the crap hits the fan.

Minibus or MPV?

This section will tell you the difference between the two:

These are purpose built vehicle that will carry 7-8 people including driver, examples of MPV's are the Chrysler Grand Voyager, Renault Espace or the Kia Sedona. They are factory built vehicles that can qualify for certain discounts with certain insurers for example the minibus Plus Big Car scheme.

Minibuses
These too can either be purpose built vehicles or can be conversions from vans most minibuses will have at least 9 seats including driver and they can go up to a seating capacity of 17 including driver, examples of minibuses are the Mercedes Vito, Ford Transit or the Peugeot boxer.

Any minibus which has seats removed must be re-register with the DVLA with its correct new seating capacity and the log book amended before we can insure it.


Dont forget also, a passenger could have thier own breakdown cover "when in any vehicle"

No idea, but how common is such a job?

My mates, who literally live at the airports, have many many contacts that are always at hand to help them out.

Maybe it's just a southern thing.

a lot of destinations leave from non-local airports, also fares are geared to each airlines favoured airport, im near Tamworth, Staffs, and have BHX and EMA within 20 minutes but ive picked up in Derby for LHR and woulda been well stuffed if anything had gone wrong

as a last resort have magnetic signs, and a screwdriver to whip your plates off and get private MPV breakdown cover....lol

and cover the 2-way/datahead when the AA get to you

try ADAC based in Germany, they take your subs and send any agent available (AA/RAC/Greenflag)

lol yeh... :badgrin: ive got my vehicle cover sorted now , but as said previously doesnt really help as by time recovery is there etc the passengers wil be missed their flight, although I know you can get there at the latest one hr before.. but ive got some local (to the airports) 8 seater taxis companys that operate 24 7 so can get them out and get the passengers away...
