Why doesn't somebody ask them where they got the figures from?

Well the Law Commission got them from some big shot economists, who in-turn got them (it would appear) out of a jamboree bag. [-(

Perhaps we should ask them to buy another lucky dip ticket then

If we took all the money that the taxi/PH trade generated it would be, in my view, a lot nearer £10 billion than £5 billion.

That includes the correct money that goes into drivers pockets, the profits the firms receive from account work and drivers, the money outsiders receive from plying permits or freephones, and umpteen other different revenue generators from within and outside of the trade.

It kind of reminds me of when the OFT appeared before the House of Commons Transport Committee almost a decade ago.

One of the MPs opened by asking the OFT reps how many taxis there were in the UK. Of course, the OFT didn't know.

Equally, the MP didn't ask anything related as a follow up. Why, because the question wasn't really relevant to anything of substance, it was simply designed to catch out the OFT and make them look stupid.

From where I was standing it actually made the MP look stupid, but of course his action served the crude political purpose of points scoring.

Coming back to the present disputed figure, certainly a good spot by Sussex, but at the end of the day I doubt if it's of much substantive relevance.

Indeed it's the kind of figure I'd generally brush over, because in the context of what it's all about it doesn't really mean anything. Other than of course to discredit IBIS's £500 report.

Well the figure looks certain to be several times that quoted by the LC.

However, it all comes down to money paid by customers to the trade.

If you include all the others things there's an element of double counting, because at the end of the day office fees, permit etc all come out of the money paid by taxi and PH users.

It's like if you say the supermarkets generate £80 billion in revenue.

You're basically looking at the money we the customers pay at the tills, not what Tesco pays to suppliers or whatever.

That makes sense to me, in fact it's probably the only thing that does at the minute. With the exception of the training which I doubt brought in any billions the only money generated is from the customer. Perhaps the idea is to increase the tax coffers because I'm sure not all taxes due by drivers are paid, if you increase the drivers via companies then the companies will pay more in taxes than the individual drivers do, but, perhaps not. Also this really doesn't have much to do with the said report unless of course the money they talk about being generated is the tax that has been paid, I'm all confused again now

Double negative - so unless you mean it does make sense - you got your statement wrong.

If what you said is correct, can you PLEASE explain it to me (and many others).

(Alex, can we have a "tongue in cheek" smiley please, or Toots might kill me, or charge so many "wobblies" I may go bust.)
