Cabbie fumes at council over lack of consultation

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

A Llanelli cabbie claims he and his colleagues are being treated like second-class citizens by the council.

Taxi driver Bob Hinton says during the revamp of the town centre, the drivers have been forgotten.

He claims that they are being deliberately excluded from the consultation process over the new taxi rank planned for the for the £25 million East Gate scheme.

Discussion

Pointing to those who have been lined up for consultation, Carmarthenshire Council, Llanelli Town Council, Road Haulage Association, Mr Hinton has asked why the taxi drivers have not been involved.

But Carmarthenshire Council says the consultation is in two stages, with discussions with the taxi drivers planned for the next stage.

Mr Hinton said: "This only directly affects one group of people — the taxi drivers, and they are the only ones who are not being consulted.

"Almost a year ago the council promised the taxi rank would be 'all-singing and all-dancing'.

"Now they are saying that they are consulting about the rank which indicates no decision has yet been made.

"Already this year several taxi drivers have simply given up, unable to face the uncertainty.

"There is talk of taking action, such as go slows and blockades — we are fed up with being treated like second-class citizens when all we are doing is trying to earn a living."

A Carmarthenshire Council spokeswoman said various agencies and bodies are being spoken to during the first stage of the consultation.

She added: "During the statutory stage we have to consult with particular agencies or bodies such as the town council and the emergency services.

"Unfortunately the taxi drivers do not have an organisation or federation they all belong to which we can consult with at this stage.

"The second public consultation will follow, where plans will be on display in Llanelli for everyone to see and give their views on.

"Taxi drivers, along with the public, are welcome to give their views at this stage.

"We can reassure all taxi drivers that they will be given the full opportunity to see the plans and give their views on them, which will all be taken into consideration before any final decisions are taken."

It was suggested that the taxi drivers needed to unite to form a "one-voice federation", to which Mr Hinton replied: "I formed the Professional Drivers Association 11 years ago.

"I informed the council and gave my contact details, and I have never had any contact."

"If they want the association to hold a meeting to discuss this we will."

Ahhh...Remember the day when the council were the servants of we the public, and now we the public are the servants of the Council.

When exactly did that change?

it all started in 1974 and has gone downhill ever since as successive governments have sought to ensure that party politics prevails over the needs of the electorate
